Meribabell writes:

With every step we take Willie’s behavior gets odder and odder. One minute his substance blows up and fills the lantern, the next he shrinks to the size of a speck.

Rumble thought it was an escape attempt and shook the lantern until he grew back to normal size.  These actions brought him to heel only briefly for he soon was wailing like a banshee.

I trust the High Fairy will know how to handle the Wisp.

On a more pleasing note I am delighted to answer the questions of our young pixie friend. He wants to know everything about the Faerie Kingdom before we arrive.

His is a keen, curious mind.

That said, I cautioned him to rein in his natural bent for pranks, as most fairies look down on such shenanigans from pixies.

Then, I broached to him what has to be done for his goat. She will have to remain outside Nonin-gal-dith in the care of the fairies of the pasture.

He willingly accepted the restriction.

The pixie pathway took us near a bog this morning. It appeared to have a reviving effect on the Wisp. Though his glow is brighter he has not recovered his voice. He says not a word but only sighs.

It is quite a pitiful sound. And is having an effect on my mood.

That is until we arrived beside a lovely lake. The sight lifted my mood and my spirit.

And I found myself not wanting to leave the peaceful scene.

I called for Rumble when I realized what was transpiring and told him to seek out the source of the spell and remove its effect on us.

It was another Wisp. A denizen of this locality. And possibly related to our prisoner. Rumble and Dunfallon chased it away.

In that instant Willie recovered his voice and informed us of his displeasure.

We shall need to take greater care in future.

Meribabell writes:

We have passed through two large pixie burrows this side of the road so far. It has slowed us considerably. What with all the curiosity generated by our presence, that is, fairies traveling with pixies, but even more so in regard to the Wisp.

We would have been merrily on our way if not for an elderly pixie who recognized our prisoner. Willie returned his greeting and launched into a full throated plea for rescue.

Thankfully the guards took control of the situation and brought us through without harm.

After that I instructed the guards to keep to the pixie pathways and avoid the villages.

Meribabell writes:

The Wisp renewed his demands to be released when we set out this morning. By turns imperious command or abject groveling. We made no effort to reason with him. And tried our best to ignore him.

The guards sent along by Nailbiter were curious and asked lots of questions about our prisoner. I did my best, but it was the testimony of Dunfallon that fully convinced them that their pity would be misplaced in his regard.

So, the guards turned their attention to reports of human bands traveling the roads paralleling the border and kept us well out of sight to chance encounters.

Pixies have a marvelous system of hidden trails and tunnels. I am much impressed.

Meribabell writes:

We finally arrived at Nailbiter’s village. His pixies welcomed us wholeheartedly. And they reported that the measures we helped put in place a moon ago proved crucial for their defense.

I was indecisive at first what to tell them about the treachery of the Wisp, but since he was well known hereabouts I thought it best to explain everything. I, however, limited it to Nailbiter and his council.

A grim silence was the result. They agreed we should keep him imprisoned. And promised to send guards with us, at least to the Faerie border, to the end we not be mistaken for aggressors or kidnappers.

That evening Dunfallon was sought out and celebrated in the great burrow hall. Both Rumble and I were amused by his accounting of his adventures thus far.

Meribabell writes:

Dunfallon was glad to see his mountain goat once again. And I think the goat was overjoyed to see him. And after supplying for her needs we set out again.

We secured Willie inside a lantern that Rumble elected to carry. Our prisoner looks pretty pale in the sunlight. Maybe more than he should. But he is full of spite and malice. Rumble twice rattled him around in the lantern to quiet him down.

Oddly, my pendant acts normally around the Wisp. Even at the height of his anger, it remained cool to the touch. I remember it reacted similarly to the stones that were pushed up into a mountain by the trolls. So long ago now, it seems.
