Day One Thousand Ninety Seven #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Before sunrise this morning Elijah rousted everyone on our floor and dispatched Tomas and our guards with warnings to evacuate the building immediately. As we descended we heard firing from the gun emplacements up on the pinnacle of the skyscraper.

While leaving our chamber I saw a wall of shot and shell filling the air above the northern defenses. But I could not make out what they were concentrated on.

Reaching the ground floor we were directed to continue downwards into the sub basements.

We were left wondering. Sight and sound were muffled and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Until the building rocked and shuddered. And then it was over.

Had the Supreme Commander been the target or Elijah?

Though we took to the trails upon the hillsides, we kept to those which held a view of the road, for we wanted to confirm the warnings of our erstwhile ‘defender.’

We did not discover what he was talking about until this morning.

There was a rather large encampment straddling the road. And as we sat watching we indeed saw army convoys being let through and civilians being turned back. Which made us wonder if the tanker trucks were operating any longer beyond this point.

Elijah and I then decided to turn our faces to the hills, as we had little reason to keep the road in view.

Before we did, I noticed a patrol set out in our direction.

Tracks continued to precede us on the trail. Another set joined the first at the juncture of the path with a mountain stream. This second set came up from below.

We slowed our pace by tacit agreement. I believe none of us wanted an encounter up here in the mountains.

We all felt relief on that score when the path forked and the pair of tracks took the upward bound route. We will stay the course and keep in view of the pass below.

We are left curious though. Tomas told us that the upward branch was marked with signs of warnings about radiation – like those in the hills up from the town on the plain.

Elijah alone remains unconcerned.

We have stayed put today in the nice dry cave Elijah found for us. We need to sort through some issues before making our next move.

Just as we had our news to share with Tomas and the Captain, so too have they returned the favor.

They had observed various scouting patrols in the area, each one checking out the routes up to the mountain pass. All have hastily beat a retreat back down to the plain.

Tomas went out on his own to see what was what. He brought back some unsettling news.

Dire warnings are posted on the roads westward. They warn that radiation is present at dangerous levels.

It must be why the army has not budged.

Day Two Hundred Fifty #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Found my walled courtyard easily enough. It is nestled among still standing buildings in the otherwise leveled East End. Having landmarks to go by prevented me from wasting the whole day looking for it.

Which was a good thing. Beforehand I had decided to allow myself just the barest minimum of time there. As it was, I was enabled to stay longer. What I learned I shared with Elijah and he in turn was able to warn everyone before we scatter to the four winds.
