While Noralei and Rayjil stood guard over our end, Cluyjil and I went in search of Dunfallon and his dragon. We found them on a cliff shelf a short way from the rift. Or rather, that is where Conjil was waiting – his focus on the opening of the small tunnel.

I called in and our pixie soon emerged. He had gone in to investigate after hearing noises within and has concluded it was a false alarm.

I was filling him in about my adventure at the tunnel on the other side when Merlin materialized between the two dragons. This startled them to rise on their haunches but their alarm subsided when they recognized the wizard who often offered them treats. And he did so, while telling us the news that the thread had stopped unspooling. He had come fully expecting to see Gibley standing with us.

Before Dunfallon could run back into the tunnel to look for his friend, Merlin told him there was a better way. With a wave of his staff over Cluyjil and himself, the wizard and his dragon were transformed down to sizes matching the pixie’s.

While Conjil and I took up guard at the entrance, the threesome entered to look for Gibley.

Finding Tinadell’s former domicile proved quicker than anyone thought it would be. Then, of course, we did have him with us. He even surprised himself by the ease with which he located it.

The chamber with his weaving machines was large enough to accommodate all of us. And there mounted in a prominent place on the back wall was a gigantic spool with the most beautiful thread I have ever beheld – a match in color to the other end of the strand.

Tinadell explained that by design – when the strand snapped, one end rewound onto this spool. We realized that we would never have found it on our own.

We were excited to move on to the next step, but the master weaver reined us in and pointed to the other side of the chamber where the opening to a small tunnel lay. He said we must first thread this strand through the tunnel down to the rift.

Gibley strode over and stood inside the opening, and seeing that he fit easily, volunteered to run the strand through the tunnel down to where it can be reattached.

When we all heartily endorsed our friend’s bravery, the goblin snatched up the one end and would have set off right away if not for the intervention of Merlin.

The wizard said we must first order our steps properly with a full understanding of how to go about this task. So he commanded us to sit down under Tinadell’s tutelage before setting things in motion.

Day Nine Hundred Sixteen #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We were on lockdown still when he left to take up the thread on our queries. He left me with a whole set of drone components to tinker with. It kept my hands busy and my mind occupied.

Elijah even lent a hand, off and on. It reminded me of the days when I knew Elijah as Lyle, and he called me ‘Enough.’ Back when we built a pair of drones. And left the city behind for the mountain.

When I voiced my recollection, Elijah said it elicited a different memory for him. It made him miss his pigeons, Rufus and Clarissa.

And that touchstone released a new flood of memories about people we hope to see again before long.
