The Fairy Diary Day 653 #TFDbyRWOz2

Meribabell writes:

I had my talk with Merlin about my concerns regarding the tenseness in Dunfallon’s “army.” The wizard stopped to consider my statement and after a passage of silence he told me that I was right. And he called for Navril.

Merlin’s solution was simple. He asked the elvish Captain to move both of his contingents further away from the wagon and to have them maintain that distance for the time being.

Navril was quick to comply and almost immediately I noticed that that sense of tension drained from the soldier less weapons surrounding the wagon.

In one sense I was relieved – but a thought nagged at me – was this a confirmation that there were traitors amongst the elves?

The return of Dunfallon on Cluyjil interrupted my meditation. He brought with him another worry. Not for anything he had seen, but the voice from his ring had again spoken. It warned of danger ahead on this road and told him that safety lay only if we took the right hand road at the next fork.

We called Rumble over and he consulted his map. All he could tell us was that it indeed will bring us around to a different approach to Gilgorgon’s mountain but we would lose a day.

We laid the matter before Merlin. He told us that his seers stone had already confirmed this to him, but he added that we needed to send Dunfallon on to Gilgorgon to advise him on our change of route.

So, at the fork, the pixie left us to take our request to the dwarves and Noralei directed Rayjil to follow after Navril’s elves who were already ahead on the chosen road.

Meribabell writes:

The atmosphere of tension and stress has all evaporated from the halls and chambers of Artoxon’s apartments and is no doubt spreading throughout his kingdom as I write this.

The great dwarf himself was finally persuaded to emerge from his bed chamber. He regained his confidence to the point that he dared to lay claim to the hatchling dragon.

A notion that lasted no more than thirteen fairy wing beats.

The hatchling will brook no interference directed at herself or Gibley – or by extension, for the moment, to ourselves. As long as she is with us, the dwarves dare not come near.

In consequence Artoxon has ordered us to be ushered from his apartments and thereafter from his kingdom, and turned his attention to his vaults and his treasure.

Bifitz received us civilly, but expects us to leave with the first available guides.

Gibley wants to accompany us and has no plans to return to the goblin outpost as he fears for his life and her safety. He adds that this was nothing that he sought out. And though Dunfallon believes him, we three fairies are not totally convinced.

Noralei brought up something the rest of us had forgotten when she wondered out loud if the egg in Merlin’s possession has also hatched – my cue for another note to the High Fairy.

Meribabell writes:

My pendant proved highly effective. Not only was I shielded from the ill effects exposure to iron wrecks on the fairy physique, but it produced a brilliant red glow to light our way.

Dunfallon helped us avoid several traps obviously set up as protective measures on the orders of the dwarf king.

Unbeknownst to us, Gibley had followed us into these depths. Dunfallon had to rescue him when he fell prey to one of those same traps. After admonishing him for his foolhardiness I relented and granted his plea to continue with us.

As promised upon reaching the lowest level we were received into Artoxon’s apartments. The very atmosphere was rife with tension for they knew for a fact that a dragon was held up in their biggest, deepest vault. And they were leaderless for Artoxon had locked himself in his bed chamber and would not answer any call.

The remaining dwarves fell down before us and begged our help in their emergency.

I asked for everything they could tell or show us about the vaults below. Thus, Dunfallon, Gibley, and I sat down with the warden of the vaults below to plan our next steps.

Day Seven Hundred Fifty One #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We had to dodge a patrol last night that was coming towards our position. We used the situation to skirt around the compound in the opposite direction with our ultimate goal a track Tomas said we could use instead of the main road.

We rested the remainder of the night safe from view.

The track took us by a lake fed by mountain streams. On the far side two tanker trucks were backing in to fill up. A third waited its turn.

At the sight of them Elijah called a halt. This applied to Tomas too.

While the Captain kept watch, I thought it an appropriate time for our two young people to dispel the tension.

     So they did, quietly.

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

The glow of a conflagration radiates from the area of the port out of sight behind us. Much speculation about the meaning of it all has set the lower decks abuzz.

I think most telling has been the reaction of the two armed guards assigned to the government shipment. One has given up on his duty and sticks solely to their cabin. The other one won’t leave their charge. I believe there exists tension between them.

Elijah has noticed this too, and he has made overtures to each in turn. So far, neither has responded. But if I know Elijah he will persist.

The rest of the crew remains open and in their down time ask a lot of questions.

Day One Hundred Eighty #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

With the advent of a new day and still no Lyle, the tension continued though unspoken.

Before we dispersed to our chores, the messenger from two days ago arrived. He handed me a note. It was from Lyle, a request that I meet him at the city gate and render him assistance.

The messenger seemed surprised when I asked to return with him. (My turn to be surprised that he was not aware of the contents of the message).

Lyle was waiting for me at the city gate. Four elderly people were with him, two of them disabled.

After we settled them in the encampment, Lyle took me aside.

Stan made the offer that one receive the mark for all.
