Day Seven Hundred Fifty One #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We had to dodge a patrol last night that was coming towards our position. We used the situation to skirt around the compound in the opposite direction with our ultimate goal a track Tomas said we could use instead of the main road.

We rested the remainder of the night safe from view.

The track took us by a lake fed by mountain streams. On the far side two tanker trucks were backing in to fill up. A third waited its turn.

At the sight of them Elijah called a halt. This applied to Tomas too.

While the Captain kept watch, I thought it an appropriate time for our two young people to dispel the tension.

     So they did, quietly.

Day Three Hundred Fifty Seven #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

The glow of a conflagration radiates from the area of the port out of sight behind us. Much speculation about the meaning of it all has set the lower decks abuzz.

I think most telling has been the reaction of the two armed guards assigned to the government shipment. One has given up on his duty and sticks solely to their cabin. The other one won’t leave their charge. I believe there exists tension between them.

Elijah has noticed this too, and he has made overtures to each in turn. So far, neither has responded. But if I know Elijah he will persist.

The rest of the crew remains open and in their down time ask a lot of questions.

Day One Hundred Eighty #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

With the advent of a new day and still no Lyle, the tension continued though unspoken.

Before we dispersed to our chores, the messenger from two days ago arrived. He handed me a note. It was from Lyle, a request that I meet him at the city gate and render him assistance.

The messenger seemed surprised when I asked to return with him. (My turn to be surprised that he was not aware of the contents of the message).

Lyle was waiting for me at the city gate. Four elderly people were with him, two of them disabled.

After we settled them in the encampment, Lyle took me aside.

Stan made the offer that one receive the mark for all.
