Meribabell writes:

Merlin was also confident that the decision would fall in Noralei’s favor. But as the day dragged on with no summons from her majesty we were increasingly uneasy.

To get away from our thoughts, Dunfallon and I went out to where Cluyjil and Willie were stabled. Willie and his cage were there, but not the dragon. The Wisp, grateful to see us, whined that he had been helpless to prevent Cluyjil from being led away.

We took him with us back to the palace where we were met by a contingent of the Queen’s guard and ushered into the throne room. The others were within already, having received their summons.

The Faerie Queen was not there. Her prime minister was. And he announced that she had departed on her scheduled trip, but had left it to him to announce her decision. She had accepted Noralei’s gracious offer to allow Rayjil to remain at the repository for now, and had added Cluyjil to her menagerie until such time as a breeding pair was provided in their place.

As the others gasped, I looked to the wizard, but saw no anger there, just a placid acceptance on his features.

Our dismissal followed and Merlin led us from the chamber to our suite where we packed our things and set out for Nonin-gal-dith.

Throughout all this I was left to wonder where was the High Fairy. And why had he not answered any of my communications via the scroll.

Meribabell writes:

I cannot begin to fully imagine what our goblin friend is going through. His sadness and disappointment dogged his every step today. And those feelings spilled over onto the hatchling, who was sluggish and clung solely to the training staff.

Dunfallon wanted to pay an unannounced visit to the other goblin location and snap up a few other dragon training devices, but I vetoed that idea and ordered him to focus on directing our way towards Merlin’s castle. Which may mean crossing the river again.

As we were going along I fell into a conversation with Rumble, since we have left the goblins behind he sensed less opposition to our movement which led him to speculate that it had been an enchantment put in place by them as a reaction to the dark elf incursion at the time of Gibley’s kidnapping.

This brought to my mind the memory of Gibley’s uncle staring at us. And the flicker of fear I saw in his eyes as they took in the sight of my pendants.

It was a reminder also to check the scroll. And therein was written a new note from the High Fairy. Merlin was now ready and willing to answer our summons.

Meribabell writes:

We were quite some distance from Artoxon’s capital before my companions questioned me about my choice of directions. Rumble, in particular, thought we should return straightaway and deliver Artoxon’s demands to their estranged brethren. And Noralei agreed – adding the thought that we had no business paying a call to the goblins until we had done so.

The words were no sooner out of her mouth when Merlin appeared before us. Together we gave him a report of our missions so far. And I committed into his care the scroll with Artoxon’s demands – which he graciously agreed to deliver for us.

Before the wizard took leave of us he thanked me for the summons (the High Fairy had alerted him to the necessity), and encouraged us to persevere in our search for the dragon and the other egg.

Day Four Hundred Seventy Eight #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

The Captain called me to the bridge in the forenoon. I’d been busy crunching numbers so I welcomed the interruption to get away from my desk and office.

I was surprised however to learn the reason for my summons. The Captain handed me his binoculars and pointed to the shore. He said our next port used to be there.

I looked, but beyond a screen of naval ships it was hard to make out what I was seeing.

It helped when he added that skyscrapers used to stand where an inlet of water lay.

I wondered out loud why the Commodore had not forewarned us.

The Captain shrugged and asked  me to prepare things for the port next in line.
