Day Seven Hundred Eighteen #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

All aspects of our situation are providential in the extreme. A day later and we would have missed G and his charges altogether.

One of the men with him had been one of those raised up from a sickbed by Elijah in that hospital in the seaport so long ago. He is from this area and had lead them to the safety of the compound. And he lead the way towards our next destination somewhere off to the north.

Without his help and his knowledge of the surrounding territory we would have completely missed the unmarked path that branches off the main trail where we now stand after our trek down from the mountains.

We made our goodbyes and parted.

Day Six Hundred Seventy #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Overwhelmed.

This is one of those times when so much has happened I am not able to write it all down. So I’ll just touch on my highest concern.

I went out early to find some light fare with which Elijah can end his fast. (And to look around and get a feel for our situation). The innkeeper looked nervous when he saw me leave.

After a multitude of encounters in the market I concluded that it was sold out of fruit. A function of the army’s presence.

That being the case I found and begged a few pieces from an army mess.

Upon my return to the inn, the innkeeper was gone. Vanished.

And so were my three friends.

Day Four Hundred Sixty Three #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

The two incoming vessels made no moves to block our exit. This heartened us and caused us to re-evaluate. Perhaps we were misreading our situation.

The robotic warship was riding station a good distance away and showing no signs of interest in our movements.

The Captain ordered the ship to half speed as the distance closed, and on his mark Tomas set a new course in an easterly direction.

The warship continued to ignore us, as our ship picked up the pace to cruising speed.
Our sense of relief grew with the new day and no signs of pursuit. I fell to contemplating other things.

What was it that Emil had given in trade for these three cargo containers?

Day One Hundred Ninety Seven Morning #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Lyle writes:

One of my leaders brought a small matter to me to judge this morning. You would think that such small irritants would be overshadowed by the seriousness of our present situation. Life goes on. I made it an object lesson.

The drone presence slackens. Only one circulates at a time. When a second arrives, the other makes one last circuit in tandem, then disappears back into the city.

A column of smoke rises again over the city. It has grown throughout the morning swelling ever upward.
