All our plans were tossed to the winds. Rumble’s observation long ago about those canyonlands resonated in my memory. Everyone looked to Merlin, and he quickly sorted out our priorities after a session with his seer’s stone.

Merlin with Nililitil and his armies will return immediately to Laguayil. (The enemy has not yet arrived to lay siege). The High Fairy will lead the fairy troops to Corbelin, which is in imminent danger. (He has ordered the Faerie Queen back to the fairy capital for safety).

The Dromadil pixies will remain here on guard. And will help us.

I was not surprised that Merlin has assigned us to stay with our original plan to descend into the shaft. Each of us – Rumble, Noralei, Dunfallon and I sense our destiny lies below.

Through Dunfallon the Dromadil pixies gifted Rumble with a map of their former strongholds that lay beneath the city of the dark elves.

So far it has proven faithful.

At the close of our meeting Merlin announced that he would accompany us. We assembled this morning and set Dunfallon the task of selecting which entrance to take into the shaft.

While we made our preparations, the pixie delved into the three we had discovered so far. He kept in mind the size of his friend Grimace and settled on the widest one as the best.

It was a moot point, however, for at the last the troll decided to stay with the allies in order to look for his brother.

We were all saddened by his decision, but understood.

In the midst of our leave taking, a messenger from Laguayil arrived with dire news. An invasion force has arisen out of the canyonlands to the south and is marching on Corbelin and Laguayil.

We have joined with our allies on the crater rim where they have set up their camps. Nililitil invited us into his pavilion for however long we stay in the area.

And who knows how long that may be.

But perhaps of more concern – our enemy remains a mystery. We gathered together at the suggestion of the High Fairy in the camp of the Faerie Queen to discuss this.

In particular, we fairies, wanted to hear how the Dromadil pixies and the Laguayilian elves defeated the dark elves so long ago. Both agree the deciding factor was the resistance of the pixies behind the scenes. And they confirm that this location, the site of their operations, was the original capital of the dark elves – but nothing remains of its former magnificence. For then, it was a city of multiple towers, seven to be precise. Even in the ruins after the defeat of the dark elves, they stood proudly. A great veil had been drawn over the area as the victors departed and those defeated were left to fester in their shame.

A fairy captain was about to pronounce the name of this sad country when Navril leapt to his feet and silenced him.

Then the elf of light declared that we must discover what had became of the dark elves and then we just might know our true enemy.

I stood up and agreed with Navril.

Other than our experience with the elf sailor Hawk, no one else has encountered any dark elves in this land that no one will name. So I proposed that I take my group and descend into the shaft to investigate.

I am thankful. Thankful we all survived. Thankful I am still here to write this, now that we have recovered from our ordeal.

Having Merlin with us made all the difference, especially his experience combating this type of menace with our allies in the days past. He kept us well away from its reach. He explained that the object was to have it expend all its poisonous spores before we closed in to disable it.

To do that we needed to keep constantly on the move – even through the night. And I had to hold all my arrows in reserve. They would have been useless otherwise.

Come this morning it was incredibly reduced in size. And the wizard encouraged us by saying it would not be much longer.

Then suddenly, the creature broke off its chase and took off for the shaft entrance. Merlin shouted that it was time to attack. I let off three arrows in succession. Each one struck home and with each one it shrunk even more.

Then it just disappeared.

Rumble and Noralei thought it disintegrated. But Dunfallon, atop Grimace, insisted it fell into the shaft.

All speculation was put to one side when Merlin announced that our allies had arrived.

Things did not go as planned – with one happy exception.

Rumble, Noralei and I scouted around the mouth of the shaft and found at least three points of entry. We were at the point of exploring further, when Merlin returned with Dunfallon and Grimace. Merlin has been successful for his part, locking down the enemy camp as to any access from the outside. Our allies will be able to advance now more easily.

The pixie and the troll however did not find Geog with the trolls in the camp – a fact at once both good and bad.

We were about to turn our attention back to the shaft, when a loud shrieking filled the air behind us. There on the rim stood the giant walking plant that has been stalking us.
