Meribabell writes:

The innkeeper approached Merlin this morning for his promised payment. The wizard asked me where the moon flower blooms had been stowed. Noralei overheard the reference to the blooms and joined us in the stable. She knew every nook and cranny in which they had been crammed. When she uncovered the lot, the innkeeper beamed with satisfaction at the amount, and said they were more than sufficient and made arrangements for their transfer.

While there Noralei took Merlin over to Conjil and showed him the ear shields she had wrought for the dragon. The wizard was impressed and told her that she must fashion some more.

By the time of our return we were unanimous in our decision – Gibley and Noralei must fly to the canyonlands and bring this same protection to the dragons of the goblins.

Once we had seen them off on Conjil, Merlin took Rumble, Dunfallon, and myself down for a walk along the waterfront. He asked us to review his findings and led us to a vessel at the end of the quay. The wizard had hired it to quarter all of us for a journey to the western isles – where he believes the former queen is held up with the dragons Cluyjil and Rayjil and her confederate the Caretaker.

Once aboard he showed us into a cabin especially fitted for him. Rumble was given his maps to go through and Dunfallon and I were handed the seers stone to see if we could come to the same conclusion as the wizard.

I soon saw why Merlin wanted other sets of eyes on the problem – for the readings were many and conflicting. And though the majority were on an island in the midst of the sea, the lands we knew were littered with others.

Merlin joined me in the Caretaker’s office and retrieved the seers stone and secreted it somewhere within his robe. I had nothing further to report from my monitoring. He told me to get prepared for he had chosen me to accompany him as soon as the dragon and wagons were got underway, we would go on ahead.

Navril with Noralei’s help, finished up their work on a harness for Conjil with which to pull the two fully loaded wagons hitched together in line. It took just a short while to acclimate the dragon to this new arrangement. Then she seemed quite eager to proceed.

Gibley and Noralei took their positions on Conjil. Navril climbed aboard the first wagon behind them; and Rumble and Dunfallon clambered aboard the second. The wizard instructed them to make for the base of the rainbow that had touched down on the road ahead. He waved his staff over the wagons as they passed by and they began to float behind the dragon. Merlin told Gibley to follow the rainbow all the way to the village of the Sprites where he and I would meet them.

Satisfied when they were off, Merlin turned to me, tapped my shoulder and in the blink of an eye we were standing at the other end of the rainbow – somewhere to the north of the Sprites’ village.

The wizard proposed that we look around until our friends arrive.

Meribabell writes:

With Merlin’s promise that Noralei was on her way, the wizard set tasks for us in the meantime. He set me up in the Caretaker’s office with his seers stone. He set it so I could monitor one place in particular – the village of the Sprites – and then alternate with a search for the High Fairy.

I was honored to be thought worthy to be entrusted with this task and to be allowed to utilize this precious tool. I was not sure what exactly I was looking for in the Sprite village but I assumed I would know it when I saw it. I did know who I was looking for in the other instances. As the view skipped around I was looking for any sign of his excellency.

While I was thus engaged, Merlin worked with Rumble, Dunfallon, and Navril to cull through the storerooms of the repository for useful items.

I believe our wizard friend foresees an armed conflict in the future. (Dunfallon tells me he is particularly interested in the weapons stored here).

Our chores were interrupted by the happy arrival of Noralei and Gibley on Conjil. I tore myself away from the seers stone for a brief moment to greet our returning friends, but I did not stay long – for I felt the weight of my responsibility too much.

Meribabell writes:

Late last night (or early this morning) the seers stone found Merlin in the territory of the Dromadil pixies. In fact their city was in his line of sight. However, upon rising this morning and checking again – the wizard had dropped from its view.

I was frantically searching the stone for any sign of him when Dunfallon came in. And before I could find the words for my distress, he declared to me that we must release Willie from his cage in the dungeon and take him with us.

To say I was taken aback is putting it mildly.

I said, “No,” without hesitation.

But Dunfallon persisted. He agreed that the Wisp had been wholly untrustworthy in our late experience with him. But he sees a world of a difference in him now. And in questioning the owl, the change in Willie was noticed about the time he and Noralei and the others defeated the Dark One. So, he hypothesized that just like in Tinadell’s case – once the enemy was vanquished – all those in his thrall were freed.

Only then did I tell Dunfallon that Merlin had disappeared from the view of the seers stone and that we must depart immediately for Dromadil to pick up his trail.

All the more then did the pixie insist that we take Willie with us (even in the face of his former promise).

Seeing that he was unmovable on this, I relented – but only after exacting a condition that the Will’o’the Wisp remain in his cage.

Dunfallon himself, tethered the floating cage to Cluyjil’s saddle and we were off to Dromadil.

Meribabell writes:

We were off. However, there was some reluctance on the part of our dragon. Noralei had mentioned to us that he appeared to be pining away for Rayjil. And now as we were putting more distance between the two his sadness was growing.

Finally, Dunfallon gave him a squeeze about the neck and whispered in his ear. His demeanor perked up immediately and his speed increased.

And when Cluyjil caught sight of Merlin’s castle, his excitement grew. In a matter of a few wingbeats we were back on solid ground. The dragon deposited us in the courtyard and continued on to his very own pen – quite content.

The owl, Merlin’s major domo, greeted us and ushered us into the wizard’s study. He knew already why we had come. At last report Merlin had just left Laguayil and was headed for Dromadil. He had left us permission to use the seers stone in his study to locate him more precisely.

The owl did make a request before leaving us there. He told us that there had been a marked change in the Will’o’the Wisp and he asked if we could take a look at him.

We agreed. While I stayed to consult the seers stone, the pixie went off to visit his old friend. And I did not see him the rest of the night.

Meribabell writes:

We took turns going out on Cluyjil and Conjil – that is, Noralei, Gibley, and me. Merlin remained behind in the cavern shielded by the enclosure. He is using his seers stone to try to locate the strands that need to be rewoven together. He has given us something better than a description – he conjured up a vision of what it looks like.

It is striking in color or actually colors. Very reminiscent of our views of the rainbow images we are familiar with in our experiences in this land. Only we have no idea of its size. Merlin says we must find both ends for they are the linch pins that Tinadell will require to seal up the gap.

Each of us must have made five trips out – all with nothing to show for it, other than the locations of small bits of fabric flapping in the wind. Noralei and the wizard are putting together a model of where everything is that should prove very helpful come time for Tinadell to make his repairs.

As I listen to the wind howling outside I wonder where Dunfallon and Rayjil are and how they are faring.
