The Fairy Diary Day 175 #TFDbyRWOz2

Meribabell writes:

Before settling in last night I wrote out a new message to the High Fairy, asking his advice in this situation. I felt so uneasy about those who will not return to their farms. Yet who am I to oppose them? Nimrood had not included a command to do so in his proclamation. Just a notice that all was now safe to return.

I must resolve this soon for as Merlin has been so clear our presence is required elsewhere.

I was so glad and relieved to receive an answer from his excellency this morning.

He stated that since we are not their rulers we are safe to allow them to choose their course. Yet he cryptically added that I must warn them that there will be consequences in the near future and they will be forced to return.

I was on my way to relay this message to Cawthrup when an uproar broke out among the humans.

As their agitation died down I was able to learn that someone or something had rounded up all their livestock and took them away.

I felt thwarted all over again as I felt I could not give them the other message in this instance. Instead I offered to help them recover their animals.

Day Two Hundred Seventy Six #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Sy’s parents had been wary before admitting us, explaining that people who spend nights in the square are unsavory characters – molesters, drunkards, robbers – all around reprobates (their description). They keep locked up tight nights.

They offered us a place to stay as long as we want.

We thanked them, but Elijah countered by telling them that we are here to get them out and back to their son.

Our offer was met with frigid silence.

When the father spoke it was with adamant absoluteness. He will never leave. I saw the same resolve in the mother’s eyes.

We turned our talk to other things – of the denizens, their rulers, and the seaport beyond.

We hope they will change their minds.

Day One Hundred Thirty Two #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Goodness prevails. Lyle met Moglen, Kip’s friend and co-leader and the outcome was very favorable. We now have a standing invitation at the other end of second avenue. And Lyle hopes it will lead to more introductions.

He stopped by Kip’s on the way back to thank him. We had asked him before about our drone sighting but all he could say then was that it was not theirs. Now he tells us that it was Stan’s drone. It always goes with him. He has struck a deal to bring more back with him. And similar technology to make their jobs as rulers easier.

I heard none of this until later. Blissfully, I passed the day in my courtyard.

Day One Hundred Sixteen #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We returned to the east end last night (via special dispensation, it being after curfew).  In the morning Lyle and I had a long conference about what to do next in light of Kip’s revelations.

First and foremost, do we attempt to contact any of the other rulers?

Especially since Kip is the only one from their number with any sympathy towards us. He is the one who arranged our entry into the east end.

I argued that it would only make sense, if we distrusted what Kip has told us.

However, Lyle feels duty bound to contact the others.

I told him I want to learn what is going on. How things came about.

We need to be prepared.

Day One Hundred Thirteen #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

I was so far west, I did not have time enough to get back before the gate closed. A local denizen, however swept me off the street. Kip guessed my plight and kindly offered a place to spend the night.

I’m very thankful. He is the only one that I’ve met who didn’t have an outright animus towards me, the poser of questions.

I asked him where I could find the rulers of the city. He didn’t seem to think that a very good idea and added people usually went out of their way to avoid their notice.

He explained that they’ve been adverse to strangers ever since large numbers migrated out of the east.

I need to inform Lyle.
