The Fairy Diary Day 120 #TFDbyRWOz2

Meribabell writes:

I reported everything to the High Fairy last night, and received a reply from him this morning. He was fully supportive of our decisions regarding Noralei. But that being said he charged the rest of us to be off as soon as possible. In particular he wanted us gone from the frontier town before fairy troops from the capital arrived. (He did not want us to be held up by endless questioning).

And his excellency ordered that Roseberry be carried back to Nonin-gal-dith for further care.

This, Roseberry’s private guard were more than willing to do.

So, as long as nothing untoward occurs, the three of us – Rumble, Dunfallon and myself will be off at first light tomorrow.

Meribabell writes:

Things have gone from bad to much worse. Rumble and Dunfallon have done all they could to bring Roseberry out of his stupor. To little effect.  His troops report that a darkness is filling the skies over the human lands and advancing directly for us.

And no sign of Merlin.

Noralei has headed up a force of fairy troops searching for the fugitive Wisp. They have had sightings, but Willie has proven too quick for them.

I assigned Dunfallon to join the chase. Before leaving, Rumble reminded him about the swampy area around the stream that passes between the last two villages.

I watched him depart astride his eagle, then turned my attention back to the looming darkness.

Where is Merlin?

Meribabell writes:

This place has been in a uproar all morning. Our captors were covered with confusion and running about to no purpose.

Later we learned the reason. While visiting Noralei and her charge, Roseberry took it upon himself to stir up and release Willie. This despite her clear warning to him.

Roseberry is lost in a well of forgetfulness and none of his troops know what to do about it.

They finally screwed up the courage to ask for our aid.

So, we took advantage of their change of heart and asked to have Noralei brought in to our chamber.

She told us that the Wisp got clean away. But added some good news in that she had made contact with Dunfallon. He will soon be with us.

Then we can concentrate on locating and recovering Willie.

And I at last got around to calling on the one whose presence should make all the difference. I used the pendant to summon Merlin.

Meribabell writes:

Roseberry and I had a contest of wills over my pendants this morning. He was unsuccessful in his attempts to wrest them from me.

I came away from the encounter with his, but returned them as a sign of my good faith.

I think it only embarrassed and angered him more.

Rumble thinks him a bit daft. And sang a little ditty couched in those terms after Roseberry had left.

We had no word from Noralei. And though I held a concern for her treatment at our captor’s hands, I was certain she could stand her ground. I consider her more than a match to the greedy little merchant.

Much later, I received a reply from the High Fairy. He simply wrote – “You know whom you have to call.”

Meribabell writes:

Since we claimed to be here on the orders of the queen of the Faerie Kingdom, Roseberry will not listen to me. They brought in Noralei and the Wisp and placed them in a cell down the way from where they are holding Rumble and myself.

I do not know why Dunfallon was not with them. I am thankful he was not. Do they even know he was with us? Or did he simply escape their notice?

I have to think that riding his eagle about like he did, how could they have failed to notice?

For now I will not say anything. And I hope Noralei will keep mum too.

But I am not sure about Willie.

Thankfully I was able to dash a note off to the High Fairy about our peril undetected.

Meribabell writes:

I was more than surprised at the identity of the one in charge of the defenses on this frontier. While the others stayed back in our thicket, Rumble took me into the town and there introduced me to Roseberry.

I already knew him of course from my few days on the fairy council in Nonin-gal-dith. And Rumble knew that I knew him. Still it was all rather a shock.

There he was in the flashy finery of the commander of fairy troops.

I could not contain myself and could tell he was insulted when I asked him on whose authority had he acted in coming here.

He claimed he had acted because the authorities were doing nothing – a course that he roundly condemned. He saw the need and called to his standard those who agreed. And he had found willing recruits from all the towns along the border.

When it came our turn to answer questions, we informed him of our mission. But instead of thanking us and sending us on our way – he denied us passage. And ordered the rest of our party brought in.

Only then did I understand the mixed messages of danger my pendant was broadcasting to me the day long.

The Fairy Diary Day 1

Here is what I could now read on the page:

At long last I am allowed to contribute to the collected wisdom of our people.

Why is age tied to that privilege? It seems so unfair. Are all my experiences before now unworthy?

I’ve been sampling what has been shared before, and I think I’m so much smarter.

(Though I can’t wait to try that transformation trick on that greedy Roseberry).

Good thing he can’t read this.

I wonder if anyone has mentioned me. Maybe I shouldn’t mention anyone by name.

No, there are names mentioned everywhere.

Now to prepare for my first appearance on the Fairy Council. The first time in fifteen hundred years that a Meribabell has taken a seat among the rulers of the kingdom of Faerie.
