The Fairy Diary Day 6

Meribabell writes:

The High Fairy sent me away with a note yesterday. It dictated the form my apology to Rumbletwist should take, and did not end until adding other orders and one very startling revelation.

I could not sleep. I felt a heaviness throughout the night.

Finally to give my spirit rest I set it aside and wrote out the apology per his order. And I tried to forget, for the moment, the more upsetting concerns he revealed.

I wish they were as small in importance as this apology now seems.

This changes everything about me and where I thought my destiny lay.

A promise is a promise.

The voice reminds me.

So, here goes.

The strangest volume has come into my possession. It is tiny and fits easily in the palm of my hand. Yet it is so thick I cannot close my fingers around the whole of it.

It took me the longest while to figure out how to open it to look within. A lock of sorts sits on the cover and laughs at my attempts to free its contents.

Only by a revelation from a dream did I finally release the pages within.

But I must stop now, in obedience.

And proceed cautiously.

Day One Thousand Two Hundred Twenty Six #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We were hesitant this morning about whether we should push on or not.  The battlefield to the south had fallen silent,  and no victorious troops (which we assumed were the armies of the East and North) had moved up into the positions vacated by the world government.

Mawuli removed every reason that we thought could hold us there when he simply stated that we must move on, and do so immediately. Every member of our party simultaneously felt impressed with the same instruction.

So in short order we decamped.

Along the way Mr. Kagi had a revelation and asked me a question- why were there no warplanes?

I then told him what had happened up near the reservoir above Jerusalem.

We learned from others in Reuben’s little community that Magwich and his comrades indeed had left to find Mawuli and to rescue him if needed. (They had acted before Elijah’s revelation).

Sy and Reuben rushed out in pursuit but returned before sundown when it was clear the trio was well out of the area.

I called a meeting this morning at Elijah’s request. He poured oil upon the anxious spirits of the people and together with the other leaders promised that their concerns would be addressed, (the chief concern being the secrecy of this location if any of Magwich’s group were captured).

Tomas sought permission to go after them, but Elijah ordered him to accompany Sy back to the redoubt.

Day One Thousand Eighty Four #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

The way I saw it, we had two choices. We either had to swing farther east and retrace the route of our original escape, or go straight in and allow ourselves to be taken, we would hope, to the Supreme Commander.

Our concern for Mei naturally predisposed us to the first option. But Mei herself thought the latter to be the best overall option. And since her part in the mission had been fulfilled in the matter of Lung she was willing to separate from us and allow us to go in and make contact.

We turned to Elijah for any revelation he could share.

But what he had to say was rendered moot when an army unit surrounded us.

Day One Thousand Seventy Five #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Mawuli wanted to know if the army’s retreat meant that we were to go back also.

Everyone else shared their impression that our mission had not concluded. Decidedly we will press on.

Today we saw that the retreating army was that of the world government. And Elijah spoke the word, “Babylon has fallen.”

That’s when Elam shared his revelation – the motorcade we had spotted yesterday must have been carrying Stan.

We also decided to stay put for the day. With so much going on before us it seemed the much safer course.

Mawuli and Sy did go out, however. They felt their way further to the east to look for gaps, then planned a swing back to the restored well.

Day One Thousand Sixty #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Elijah gathered us together after breakfast. The general expectation prevailed that he would announce our departure immediately. All the more so since Elam’s revelation that he too had been given a vision of a rising tide of blood.

But Elijah caught us off balance. Though he concurs that our group is now complete, he does not agree that it is time to leave.

He has called for another fast and that it is to commence tomorrow when we set out on to the road eastward. We shall halt on the stone bridge and there hold a vigil and await a sign.

We then passed the day in preparation both physically and spiritually.

And Mei cheerfully lent a hand to all.

Day Nine Hundred Fifty Two #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We are still in the dark. It was a day of waiting and hoping for something to happen. But no one reported any contacts from the outside (for most cannot conceive of it as happening otherwise).

With the number of guards dropping again today, it seemed that an opportune time to put a plan into motion had passed us by.

And Reuben has deepened the mystery by his revelation that the fact of their disappearance has not been reported beyond the walls of this prison. Though there is little mystery as to why our jailers would prefer it that way, (their very lives no doubt depend upon hiding it), it further clouds how it was accomplished.

And can it repeat?

Day Nine Hundred Twenty Five #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Though Tomas and the Captain were disappointed about being removed from the search, they were understanding and even supportive about our stepping in to take over their latest lead.

I must say that I was not at first certain that our involvement was called for, nor even wise. But a revelation was granted to me through the night, a dream that came and went three times, and each one different, allowing me to see Elijah’s part, then Tomas’s here, and finally mine with Elijah. (The Captain asked me where he fit in but I had nothing to tell him).

So, for now, we await the timing for our adventure.

We ask the Spirit to lead that we may obediently follow.

Day Eight Hundred Forty Six #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Snow remained atop the mountain to our front, lasting well beyond that which has disappeared down here on the desert floor. We should arrive at its base in one more night march.

That occasion will mark the extent of the instructions given to us by Quasimo. Elijah intimates that he has a sense for our next immediate destination, but thus far has not divulged it to me, wanting instead that I confirm it independently.

I am asking, but no answer has been forthcoming. Neither between my first and second watch, nor after the second.

I was tired and nodded off.

Perhaps during tonight’s march. I pray for a revelation.

Before drifting off again my thoughts turned to our absent friends.
