The Fairy Diary Day 53 #TFDbyRWOz2

Meribabell writes:

When we arrived at the base of the mountain we were no longer in the same land. Instead of a depression in the middle of a plain, we stepped onto a sandy desert. We could not have been more surprised. Our pixie’s goat had to be restrained from turning around and climbing back up the mountain.

If not for another message from the High Fairy, we all might have joined Dunfallon’s mount on its desperate attempt to flee this unwelcome place.

Satisfied we were where we needed to be, we pushed onwards keeping the mountain to our backs. (The only way I could think to navigate).

And just like on our world we passed through a veil into a more inviting terrain.

Rumble was particularly gratified to see plants here – with wildly exotic blooms.

Meribabell writes:

Holding steady to our heading led us to a vast depression in the plain. We all thought it very odd. And were each uneasy in a way we could not express. That is until Dunfallon remarked that he sensed something magical in the very air around us.

That was just moments before we passed through something like a veil, and what was nothing before – cleared up and we could then see heaps of stones at the center of the depression.

We passed the balance of the day examining the structures. For indeed the stones – huge and heavy – were arranged into complex geometric patterns.

Before the sun went down we made sure to put some distance between ourselves and the mysterious buildings.

Meribabell writes:

Dunfallon reports that we should arrive at our destination tomorrow. Rumble gets more excited with each landmark that the little fellow points out. And there have been a lot of those. I can easily imagine that he knows every blade of grass upon this whole plain and would know if any were out of place.

He should prove very valuable when we set up the defenses for his people in the rolling hills.

I am anxious even though the strange darkness has not returned. Or rather precisely because it has not returned.

I wrote to the High Fairy but so far he has not replied. I shall keep him informed with my impressions. He seems to think they are worth something.

Day One Thousand Two Hundred Twenty Three #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Small pitched battles pock-marked the plain as the opponents sent out feelers to test the other’s mettle. Tomas guesses that the elite troops of the world government were successful at keeping the other two armies in check close to their lines.

Meanwhile the numbers of the army of the East were swelling in their positions on their front lines. It’s easy to see that when they reach a critical mass, they will burst forth and carry all before them.

In all this, Mawuli called my attention to a vehicle circulating about the camp of the world government. He is sure it is Stan’s. When it had accomplished its purpose it set its heading and sped out to the north.

Day One Thousand Two Hundred Nineteen #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Elijah has released his disciples. They shall return to the hiding place and take with them a message to our people there.

The message – to prepare for the end by banding together to pray for us. Especially on the ninth day from today. If they travel night and day they should arrive well before then.

Mawuli caught them on the way out and asked them to assure his parents that he was alive and well.

For now we will stay right where we are. Elijah wants to insure that the armies of the East and North drive the forces of the world government back into the plain below the the site of Sy’s redoubt.

We shall shadow them from above.

Day One Thousand Two Hundred Fourteen #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Elijah’s declaration that we are to remain here until further notice, has become increasingly uncomfortable. The elite elements of the army below have come to rest and set up camp, filling the plain from side to side.

Tomas won’t leave his lookout position as he is closely monitoring the small foraging groups. Especially those on this side of the plain.

The Captain finally gave up trying to relieve him and has simply joined him. I circulated between them and Elijah all day long.

Returning to Elijah at the onset of dusk, I was surprised to find him sitting and talking with a guest.

Before I could form a word on my tongue, Mawuli sprang to his feet and greeted me.

Day One Thousand Two Hundred Thirteen #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

During each of our turns on watch through the night, we observed the army passing by in the plain. And they ceased to throw out units to their flanks.

In the light of day we finally could ascertain that these troops belonged to the world government. Most looked fresh and ready for action, but there were a few that appeared wasted, just limping along. And those were prodded forward mercilessly. Prisoners.

The units left behind in ambush waited unmoving all day. We could see them for we knew where to look, but invisible, we were sure, to anyone below.

Their trap looks to be a failure. The end of the retreating army came in view with no one in pursuit.

Day One Thousand Two Hundred Nine #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We have had no sightings of any troops in pursuit of us. Nor, thankfully, any sign that any adversaries are aware of our presence.

There have been some patrols on this road, but Tomas pulled us from view well in advance of any danger.

Tomas tells us that tomorrow we shall alter course to the south and Babylon. All Elijah advises at this time is that we stay on the high ground as in our other journeys and avoid descending into the plain until absolutely necessary.

I hiked beside the Captain and we conversed. It has been an age since we have spent any time sharing the details of our lives. He too feels an urgency to help Mr. Kagi.

Day One Thousand Two Hundred One #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Mei and Jezer along with Lung and the former soldiers of the army of the East have left for the hiding place. We embraced and sent them out with our prayers.

Of interest was the noticeable thinning in numbers of the world government army on the vast plain below. All movement from there has been towards the conflicts raging out of sight in the direction of Babylon. No one has come up to inspect the redoubt nor inquire after the goings on here.

For now Reuben and Sy will remain. Elijah and I and the Captain and Tomas intend to be here when the armies clash in the valley. We wanted Mawuli to go with Mei, but he won’t budge.

Day One Thousand One Hundred Ninety Six #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Sy woke us in the early morning with a report that explosions could be heard coming from the direction of Babylon. As we strained to see over the horizon we could make out the glow from the same. Then the many camps far below on the plain stirred to life.

We watched with interest the goings on throughout the day.

Moglen’s outpost on these heights packed up and descended down to the redoubt.

Another group operating from the redoubt, labored all the daylight hours, and succeeded in carrying the crate half way up to the high place.

Before the sun set Reuben and his team arrived, guided by Sy’s men sent down for that purpose.

Elijah and I made ready.
