Dunfallon’s “army” clinked and clattered continually today, as we traversed wave upon wave of rolling hills. The ride in the wagon was smooth enough, at least the Caretaker was no longer complaining. Noralei was excited, she could almost smell Nonin-gal-dith and home through the intervening hills and forests. It also had an effect on Rayjil as there seemed to be an extra bounce in her step.

Merlin announced that he would go on ahead to the Faerie capital and there make arrangements for the trial of her former majesty and the Caretaker. To that end he asked Dunfallon to fly him there on Cluyjil. The pixie was more than ready for he wanted to stop in at the pixie burrows on his return.

After the wizard’s departure, Rugis and Strukul and the dwarf escort took their leave of us. They felt their services were no longer needed. So, there we were, Noralei, Rumble, and I, and the two dragons, Rayjil and Clemjil – now only days away from our destination.

By day’s end, with the forestlands in view, Dunfallon returned. He and Cluyjil had delivered Merlin safely to the capital. And though intending to stop by to pay his respects to Nailbiter and his pixies, he was called away by the voice from the ring to see the Will’o’the Wisp. Willie had a dire request to be relayed to us. He advised us to keep her former majesty as far as possible from him, as he was highly susceptible to her influence.

I asked Rumble to come up with a more suitable route for tomorrow.

Meribabell writes:

Gilgorgon’s dwarves have now all returned. They have covered the immediate vicinity of their mountain and have nothing to report about our pixie – but they did come across dragon droppings. Therefore, Merlin has decided to turn his focus to the possibility that the dragon Dunfallon had encountered is on the hunt for the eggs.

It will fall to us fairies to take up the search for Dunfallon. Once we have everything together we will set out for the pixie burrows, and failing that to Willie’s bog or even Nonin-gal-dith beyond. That is, if we don’t meet up with the High Fairy before then.

Because Rumble reasoned that Dunfallon may have lost his silver whistle with which to summon his eagle, he came up with the idea to take the pixie’s mountain goat along with us. (It was just delivered to Gilgorgon today by Cawthrup’s son Corbet who has offered to accompany us just to this side of the pixie burrows).

When all was prepared Noralei hurried us down the mountain before night set on.

Meribabell writes:

So much has happened today – I hardly know where to begin. Our peril has been dire. And by comparison then how much greater (and surprising) has been our salvation.

Our rest was interrupted midway through the night. A cold presence crept into our camp and a darkness covered the glowing moon. Its shadow enveloped Rumbletwist. And he lay there paralyzed. All I could see were his eyes pleading for my help.

I called out for help myself. Rumble later told me that light swirled around the camp and collected upon my person and pushed the darkness back.

The light held the darkness at bay until a tiny figure bounded into camp at dawn’s first streak of light.

He was the tiniest pixie I have ever seen.

He stood aghast at our plight. But then chuckled mightily as the darkness melted away.

His name is Dunfallon. And he comes from the pixie burrows in the rolling hills ahead.

He and Rumble have become fast friends as we traveled the plain. He kept us from many pitfalls along the way.

Meribabel writes:

I have caught my breath today. Things go much easier when I have tasks to perform with clear goals in view. So thankful for the direction of the High Fairy.

Rumble and I have been setting the groundwork for the defense of the pixie burrows. He has brought fairy magic to combine with that of the pixies. This should render them hidden from all sentient beings.

We will still have to seek out an encounter with the forces aligned against us in order to put our defenses to the supreme test.

Rumble and I hope to sally forth into the unknown regions to the west.
