Day One Thousand Two Hundred Twenty Seven #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We found the road unencumbered by patrols or checkpoints until we neared the area of the stone bridge. Well before then, Tomas guided us up to the level above the destroyed altar.

Though still in ruins people were hard at work attempting to make it serviceable. All the more ugly.

Mr. Kagi was the first to notice. Then I recognized the people being forced to work on the edifice – the prisoners paraded through the world government camp but a few days ago.

After a quick calculation in my head (and my memory of the shape of last night’s moon) I knew that tomorrow marks the return of the new moon.

My blood ran cold over the fate of these prisoners.

Reuben is heart sick. Not only for the loss of his friend and the others, but perhaps more so because he failed to meet them and bring them up here to the heights.

We are thankful that Sy had the presence of mind to restrain Reuben when he wanted to run headlong down to the aid of his stricken comrades.

Elijah has Reuben with him now and is counseling him.

I will confer with Tomas. Reuben, upon his arrival two days ago reported that the Captain and Jezer had returned. So I will send Tomas out to intercept them. And Mei.

Thankfully all conflict remains far away from the distant valley below.

Time to prepare for the new moon tomorrow.

I was in the set apart place when Elijah entered. I could sense he had arrived to talk. But he patiently waited not wanting to interrupt.

For my part I didn’t want to be interrupted either. I was intent one more time to petition the Spirit to move on Mawuli’s behalf. My mind was losing its concentration, however, and I was straining to focus.

Suddenly the Spirit interrupted me with two words. “New moon.”

I was startled so I turned to Elijah and repeated the words.

He nodded, his lips compressed into a grim line.

“The next one is in ten days. From Tomas’s report we know Stan and Moglen missed the last one. We shall thwart this one too.”
