Meribabell writes:

At the close of our meeting Merlin announced that he would accompany us. We assembled this morning and set Dunfallon the task of selecting which entrance to take into the shaft.

While we made our preparations, the pixie delved into the three we had discovered so far. He kept in mind the size of his friend Grimace and settled on the widest one as the best.

It was a moot point, however, for at the last the troll decided to stay with the allies in order to look for his brother.

We were all saddened by his decision, but understood.

In the midst of our leave taking, a messenger from Laguayil arrived with dire news. An invasion force has arisen out of the canyonlands to the south and is marching on Corbelin and Laguayil.

Meribabell writes:

When we were prepared to leave on our new mission the realization dawned upon me that we needed to send word to Noralei that we would not be headed her way until much later. So, when the king presented us with his proclamation to take with us to his people, I broached the question to him. He graciously offered to send a messenger to inform her.

Having settled my mind on that matter, Rumble and I took leave of our new friends and joined Dunfallon and the troll brothers out in the field. The pixie was delighted to be on the road again and was looking forward to new adventures.

I can say that I had similar feelings though I admit they were somewhat dampened by the evidence of destruction everywhere we looked.

Rumble and I announced that we intended to make our way slowly and devote some of our time to coax the fields back to health.

Day Nine Hundred Ninety Five #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Jezer and Tomas passed through again this morning to refill the tanker truck. They reported that Reuben was working himself to the bone in service to the injured. So Elijah thought it best to select some of his ‘pupils’ and send them on ahead to lend a hand.

When he had assembled them, they all volunteered. Elijah picked twelve and sent them out.

The rest he dismissed asking them to return later and to each bring a friend to replenish their numbers.

I sought out the Purser and together we came up with a list of ideas to take to Mawuli and his advance team. We sent a messenger with this list aboard the tanker truck upon its way through.

Day Three Hundred Twenty Seven #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

A messenger from the Captain came for Elijah early today. But he was already out and about and I did not know where.

This crewman was downcast at the news. They had been all night trying to cut their way into Stan’s cabin – unsuccessfully.

I told him to check the superstructure from this level down, and I would cover the upper levels.

I learned his whereabouts when I questioned the Purser in his office.  That gentleman told me that Elijah was in the sanctuary cabin.

I turned to go, but he held me up. Elijah had left word that he was not to be disturbed.

There was nothing to do but go tell the Captain that we have to wait.

Day One Hundred Eighty Two #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

The messenger came into our camp this afternoon with Flowers in tow.

He delivered his charge then departed. Flowers took up a stance and motioned to all to gather around. He announced that all was resolved. He had met with Moglen and together had hammered out an agreement. Since the world authority would settle for one in the outside community to represent the others by bearing the mark, he, Flowers, had volunteered to fill that position.

Lyle raised a hand and halted the proceedings. He crossed to Flowers, tapped his shoulder, and led him out.  At Lyle’s nod, I followed.

At the vineyard, Lyle pointed to the desert and said, “Go and find yourself.” Flowers launched out without a word.

Day One Hundred Eighty #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

With the advent of a new day and still no Lyle, the tension continued though unspoken.

Before we dispersed to our chores, the messenger from two days ago arrived. He handed me a note. It was from Lyle, a request that I meet him at the city gate and render him assistance.

The messenger seemed surprised when I asked to return with him. (My turn to be surprised that he was not aware of the contents of the message).

Lyle was waiting for me at the city gate. Four elderly people were with him, two of them disabled.

After we settled them in the encampment, Lyle took me aside.

Stan made the offer that one receive the mark for all.

Day One Hundred Seventy Eight #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Awoke this morning and during my ablutions I discovered I had been bitten by something. Such is life in the outdoors.

On a similar note, we also received a messenger from Moglen.  A different type of pest.

I know – how uncharitable of me. Probably the irritation factor of that bite unsettling my equilibrium.

Lyle was commanded to accompany the messenger back into the city.  He went freely. After I argued with him. That bite again.

I kept busy in Lyle’s absence. I had to change our original plan of trying to find a more direct route down to the desert. Instead I stood with Grazie and selected seed for planting.

In times like these, I really miss my walled courtyard.
