Day One Thousand Fifty Four #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Elijah took us up to the heights above the redoubt where Sy used to station his sentinels. The magnificent view from which was made all the more so by the beautiful day dawning upon us.

In the far distance I could make out what I took to be tanker trucks plying back and forth on a plain.

I took the time to note the lay of the land from here to there and asked Sy about the best routes.

During this endeavor two figures appeared down on the road that we came in on.

Sy remained in place while Elijah and I went down.

Recognizing them at the last we hurried down the road to greet the Captain and Mei.

Day Six Hundred Sixty Three #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We have made the transition from travelers by night back to daytime beings. The days are hot but not blistering.

Our trail and the river lead to a broad valley that we can just glimpse from each rise we crest.

The up and down nature of the track took its toll on Elijah. The upward legs were trying for everyone. But very noticeable in his case. The Captain was ever at his elbow.

Elijah chose our stopping place for tonight – on one of the downward slopes which has access to the river. So we took the opportunity to refill our water supplies.

There is something familiar about the lay of the land hereabouts. Something that harkens back to my youth.

Day Six Hundred Nine #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Our time here is drawing to a close. We all feel it. The Captain wants it sooner rather than later, before the path westward is closed off by the completion of the army base.

Tomas, however wants to explore other ways first.  Perhaps to go through the city and head westward on the other side.

I thought the idea commendable but wondered if there might be an easier way to turn up the information.

I asked Elijah about going to our neighbor to sound him out on his knowledge of the lay of the land. Certainly he has proven trustworthy.

Elijah was open to the idea, but cautioned to make no promises.

We called next door and found him gone.
