Meribabell writes:

Merlin has transferred me to the repository. I am under Tinadell’s orders to bring back the wagon and whomever and whatever I need to effect the transfer of the two prisoners to Gilgorgon’s mountain.

The wizard then returned to the capital to be my advocate there. He explained beforehand the present circumstances to my friends here – Dunfallon, Noralei, and Gibley.  And spent some time privately encouraging me. He had long suspected that I had been human – but it is even more clear now to him that I am fully a fairy.

I was thankful for his vote of confidence but perhaps more so for my current assigned task to keep my thoughts occupied and off that predicament.

According to Gibley’s estimation the dragonlings are ready to assume their roles as guardians of the repository. So he asked me if he can accompany me in the wagon back to the capital and there retrieve Conjil and return to the canyonlands. I agreed but consequently had to decide to assign Noralei and Rayjil to remain in charge here for now.

I wanted Dunfallon to join me in my assignment. So he harnessed Cluyjil to the wagon and selected a good portion of his soldier-less weapons to accompany us.

The goblin and the pixie and I set out for the capital.

Meribabell writes:

The wait is over. On more than one account.

As soon as Rumble returned from Gilgorgon’s mountain with their acceptance of Tinadell’s request, the Fairy King announced my appointment as the new High Fairy.

Talk shifted to where the investiture would take place. Forgotten for the moment were the arrangements to transfer the prisoners to Gilgorgon’s keeping.

Most sentiment in the kingdom calls for the investiture to take place in the chambers of state within the palace here at the capital. If I have anything to say about it, I would prefer a more private ceremony at the repository so that all of my friends could be in attendance.

But immediately all such notions became moot. For Tinadell’s prime minister challenged my qualifications for the post on the grounds that I was not born a fairy at all, but was a human – kidnapped as a baby and transformed into a fairy.

Thus, that spiteful slur of the queen was back to haunt me. (Perhaps passed on to the prime minister by her sometime in their interactions).

Merlin leapt to my defense at once, but not in an expected manner. For he put forth the argument that my origin had no bearing whatsoever on my fitness for the position.

I was taken aback – and left wondering what the wizard knew that I did not.

Meribabell writes:

Sitting beside Noralei on the wagon this morning was quite a change from yesterday. Navril’s elves rigidly kept their distance, so the mood continued to be one of optimism among Dunfallon’s “army.” I had had the opportunity to discuss my fears of a hidden enemy within, and he has taken it upon himself to vett everyone under his command.

So, I had every reason to bask in the sunshine filling the air around us. When some humming arose again in the cage with her former majesty. Noralei began a tune of her own as a counter to her attempt to lull us into a stupor.

Disgusted at being foiled, the renegade queen began calling us names. One epitaph, aimed at me, I did not recognize. It seemed particularly vicious. At that point Merlin broke in to command her silence and took me aside to explain to me the gist of her jibes.

She had called me a halfling, half human and half fairy – and totally abominable.

Indeed an insult. (I write that even though I do have friends that are human).

I did not have any time to dwell on the slur, for Dunfallon and Conjil returned at that instant.

Although his mission had been successful – the dwarves will meet us on their border on this road – the pixie was more excited to report on a sighting while on the way back. A force of elves was cutting through the forest from the road we had left to the one we are currently traveling.

Meribabell writes:

I caught up with Dunfallon this morning outside the home of the High Fairy. We had all been summoned. He informed me that he had come to the conclusion to leave his mountain goat behind. He thought it best all around, arguing that it would be horrible to lose her to some hungry human and besides he could call upon his golden eagle for transport.

I thought for sure the High Fairy would have made that very decision, but I was glad the pixie had made it himself.

Rumble was already inside and he had a map for each of us. Each drawn by himself. He says he composed it from all the best charts available.

I remember thinking that it wouldn’t be long before we were off to the human lands. A sentiment that the High Fairy spoke out loud, but he added that he felt that our team was not yet complete.

In the stillness after his pronouncement I knew whom I must see tomorrow.

Meribabell writes:

Time seemed to limp along today. We stayed put caring for our friend. Rumble can only remember one detail from his experience these past two days. His cloak of invisibility hung up on a thorny plant he was passing. Then, as he described it – “night fell in the middle of the day.”

It is clear to me that the trancing spell commenced at that juncture. But perhaps what is more disturbing this spell shrouds itself in forgetfulness.

Despite these potential dangers, I yielded to Dunfallon’s desire to go out to look around.

He brought back Rumble’s cloak. In two pieces. He rent it when disentangling it from the thorny plant it was half hiding.

And in the action he just escaped the notice of a lone human camped nearby.

Dunfallon did not hang around lest he suffer the same fate as Rumble.

Meribabell writes:

The pixies have finally given me back my things. Having chased off the human, the rest joined the ones who seized me.

They carried me off to their great hall deep under the mound. They proved themselves friendly to me. Mainly because they believe I had taken their side against the human. Some of the younger ones as a prank ran off with my things when I had briefly put them aside.

It took a while for the elders to track them all down and restore them to me.

In the meantime the leader Nailbiter showed me every courtesy. They even offered their help in capturing Rumbletwist.

I must weigh my next steps carefully.

Meribabell writes:

Rumbletwist changed direction today. He actually looped back to that human track and appeared to be following the troop from yesterday.

I kept on after him.

And that is how I witnessed a remarkable scene.

A man, a straggler from the caravan, had stopped beside the road and was poking among some rocks. He was getting ever nearer to a lumpish mound of earth at the base of a huge pine tree.

I supposed something glittery caught his notice. Not a good idea where pixies are concerned. They swarmed him and drove him into the woods. And another band made off with his horse.

I should have been paying more attention to my own position and could not get a shot off.
