Day One Thousand Thirty Eight #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Meesa came in with our host when he returned from the daily foraging. We had been indecisive as to what we should be doing, so we were actively waiting. We each individually had come to the conclusion that something was immanent.

Though Elijah was prepared for the news she brought, I was not.

The sight of her reminded me that there was something I should have done. Once we had made contact with Elam I should have sent word to Quasimo that his mission to the Galilee was no longer necessary.

And here Meesa was reporting that Quasimo was now underway.

Elijah took it in stride. He was more interested that army units were thronging the roads to the east.

The leader of the guard would not leave Elijah’s side. Instead they conversed the night through. His men joined them upon rising with the sun.

All camp discipline and duties have been pushed aside.

I puttered about and got together a meal for everyone.

Then served each one as the meeting continued.

At the last, the leader begged Elijah to remove his mark. Elijah turned to me and called for a mirror. I soon returned with a small hand one. As soon as he gazed on his image, the mark faded. Elijah said he would now be called Sy.

As he sent them away to our former host, Elijah was candid about what lay ahead for them.  Hardship and persecution.

When last in this vicinity we were hounded by drones. Nothing flies above our heads now, not even birds.

Our host explained everything to Elijah. He is related to the woman who had helped us. She disappeared a few days before the deluge from the skies took down everything electronic.

Elijah in his turn explained the mystery behind the woman’s disappearance. It was a great comfort for our host. The time was indeed ripe for him to believe.

When we told him our intent to continue moving onwards into the city, he balked and practically begged us not to. He does all within his power to avoid drawing attention to himself and his people.

We decided to acquiesce for now.

Day One Hundred Fifteen #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Before he left yesterday, Kip offered to help us contact the authorities.

So, our chores, being all caught up, both Lyle and I ventured back into the western end via the second avenue entrance. This time the guards sent us on our way with an escort. All the way to Kip’s house.

There, Kip disclosed to us that he is one of the authorities that we have been seeking. I was speechless, though Lyle seemed to take it in stride, hardly reacting at all. He just took to posing all the questions he could think of.

For his part, Kip was the gracious host, and soon had explained most things to Lyle’s satisfaction.

And suddenly things became infinitely more complicated.
