Day Six Hundred Sixty #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

The high mountains to the south are dropping behind us, and slipping below that horizon. At the same time we can finally see the end to this desert, and the beginning of a mountain range rising to block our way.

Of course, none of this was apparent during our night passage, but has now become so clear as we stop at a fork in the road to rest for the daylight hours.

We have some decisions to make before tonight. So, Tomas, ever the explorer, left us to see if the right fork would take us in a desirable direction.

Both Elijah and I think that the space between two of the peaks may indicate the presence of a passage.

Day Six Hundred Forty Four #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Through a mutual agreement Elijah and I kept an eye on our friend lest he do something rash. I kept him engaged in conversation and later accompanied him to the cave. There we prayed for Tomas.

Later upon our return, the sky to the south was filled with more lights than ever. The Captain asked Elijah how long it had been going on. His reply upset him. And the Captain demanded to know why we had not been fetched. Before he could answer, a string of flashes lit up the foothills below the high mountains.

There was no stopping the Captain at that point. But we managed to limit our travel backward to the amount of night left to us.

We all saw them last night. Lights in the sky over the high mountains.

I was making my way out to the meditation cave when I spotted them. I ran to tell the Captain, but he had already noticed them and stood there gaping.

Before we could go out to notify Elijah, he was by our side.

Our immediate concern was for Tomas. The Captain wanted to set out and retrace our steps.

Elijah dismissed his wishes out of hand and refused to let him depart. We did reach a compromise instead. We agreed to wait another day in our present position.

We won’t decide until then our course of action, whether or not to allow the Captain to return.

Day Six Hundred Thirty Nine #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We bid Tomas godspeed. He is on his way south to investigate the area towards the high mountains.

We traveled last night, and will wait here one full day, travel another night and wait again. That way it should be easier for Tomas to catch up.

Tomas plans to travel night and day, with only the minimum of rest time, for the same object.

We only had the stars and a brief appearance by the moon to light our way. No flitting lights troubled the sky.

I wanted to accompany Tomas. I truly did. But Elijah reminded me of our commitment never to part ways again.

We shall rest through the day, and pray for Tomas through the night tomorrow,

Day Six Hundred Thirty Seven #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Our path took a sudden turn northward near the middle of our nightly trek. I had an intimation that the turn was purposeful and was glad when Tomas reported a well ahead.

From that point we were again on a westward course.

The lights in the sky returned again. This time, however, they were concentrated in the area towards the high mountains. And from that quarter a series of flashes lit up the ground beneath those swarming lights in the sky.

The Captain and Tomas both tell us that a massive attack is going on over there. Against whom or what is the question.

I can only think that the million man army may be the focus of their wrath.
