Rayjil is up and about. Gibley sticks to her side trying to anticipate her every need. And Cluyjil in a way seems concerned for her well-being, nuzzling her, and fetching fire plants for her to eat. And for her part Rayjil is very curious about the purple beacon stone displayed on Cluyjil’s chest.

I look at her and wonder what she knows – what she experienced on her recent crossover to the other side.  And what is waiting for us when we all go over.

The Caretaker came by to collect Cluyjil. He needed him up above the Crack of Doom in order to recharge the large green crystal that is the first defence for the bell. He tells me that each charge is lasting for well over seven days now. That sounded excellent to me until Gibley reminded me that he and Noralei had been on the other side with Rayjil fifteen days before being summoned back. I shall have to talk to Merlin to see what he thinks about that problem.

The High Fairy spent the bulk of the day working with Dunfallon as the pixie put Cluyjil through his paces. I popped in and out of their sessions and was pleased to observe that the crystal is glowing longer and longer between the dragon breaths.

Most of the time, however, I sat with Noralei up beside the Crack of Doom, discussing her experiences on the other side – trying to pull from her memory the things she did not write about.

She had much to relate about the feelings that plagued her there. Fear being tantamount. She believes something must be done to protect our spirits when we return there so we can keep moving forward. I told her I would talk with Merlin for I believe my pendants may just be all we need for the desired protection.

Then I asked her who she thought Hawk was referring to in his warning for the future. I was thinking they might be Artoxon and Bifitz and was wondering what had happened to them and where they might be right now.

It is always difficult to wait upon others when you want to launch out into action yourself. So I understood what my pixie friend was going through. Though I did keep an eye upon him all day, and gave him various tasks with which to occupy himself.

Noralei forged a ring and affixed the crystal into its setting. Then she pocketed it while rejoining Dunfallon in further testing for the other crystals. The largest one proved to have an interesting property. Each time Cluyjil breathed on it the light emanating from its interior lasted longer. And the more it was exposed to him the brighter it glowed. There was a definite accumulative effect.

I began to think that we may have chosen the wrong crystal to mount on the ring. But Noralei guessed my line of thought and chided me for it. She said if somehow we can charge it to last for days – that will free both dragons to send with the assault team to the other side.

At that thought I could not gainsay her.

Meribabell writes:

Noralei asked the High Fairy to join in with her and Dunfallon as an impartial observer to their tests on the green crystals. All of them passed Noralei’s expectations for effectiveness against our enemy, but his excellency selected one from among them that more quickly and more brightly reacted to Cluyjil’s fiery breath. He wants that one to be set on a ring to replace that of Gibley’s which was lost on the other side.

His excellency proclaimed that that one would go with the team when we mount the offensive.

The other four will be kept for use in the repository.

With the testing concluded, Dunfallon came to me and begged to be chosen for the assault – whether by himself or as part of a team.

I told him that the decision is not mine to make and added that the final decision was being left up to Merlin.

That of course prompted him to request permission to set out immediately to look for the wizard. Reluctantly I ordered him to wait. And answered his objections, by telling him that the High Fairy had already left for Merlin’s castle. And asked him to exercise a little patience along with me.

We had a bit of a scare, over a false alarm as it turned out. There are black birds and then there is that black bird. I realize that it was due to my failure in properly describing the one to be on the lookout for. It is so much bigger than the normal crow or raven. And it acts in such a suspicious manner that it always calls attention to itself. It practically exudes malevolence.

The Caretaker is satisfied with the swiftness of his troops in reacting to a threat. So, I guess we can consider it in a positive light overall.

Dunfallon returned with Cluyjil just as the emergency was ending. He brought with him five different green crystals that he collected along the way. The pixie and Noralei will test each one.

We are hopeful that one will prove to be what we are looking for.
