Thankfully it was an uneventful transit up to Gilgorgon’s mountain. Neither we on the ground, nor Noralei up in the air spotted any suspicious looking elves.

Gilgorgon had a sumptuous welcome for us set up in his great hall. Our host made the rounds to thank each of us profusely for everything we had done for the dwarves – both for bringing peace to the two dwarf kingdoms and their consequent prosperity – but also for the recent rescue from the freeze that had been threatening the world.

A secure place was set up at one end of the hall from which our prisoners could observe the proceedings (and we could keep an eye on them). I heard not a peep from that quarter. Curious, I wandered over a couple times to check. Each time her former majesty greeted me with her favorite slur. I did not even bother to lift the cover.

On the second instance, Rumble met me and asked to talk. He took me down to the large assembly area where the wagon with the Crack of Doom and the dragons were kept. My friend was uneasy and was feeling guilty for it. On the journey up the mountain it seemed to him that a couple of the dwarves expressed an odd interest in what was contained in the large box. He did not like the gleam in their eyes after he told them what was inside.

So, Rumble decided to stay with the wagon and the bell overnight. I was not sure that I agreed with his assessment, but then again I was not present at the encounter. However, I did promise him that I would talk to Merlin about the situation.

Meribabell writes:

All the way down to the great hall of the dwarves, Gabhe recounted everything that has happened to her since last she saw us. And she had to tell it in order – so that at the moment we entered the great hall she was only up to the time that the conflict broke out between the two dwarf kingdoms.

We were not prepared for an empty hall, the sight of which only filled us with more anxiety – and questions.

Where was Gilgorgon? And where were his dwarves?

Gabhe answered simply. Gilgorgon had mustered his troops and led them off down the subterranean passageways to the gates to the Low-way of the dwarves. She had not seen him or anyone since. But before departing the dwarf king had charged her to look after things while they were gone.

This being the case Merlin asked her permission to assemble in Gilgorgon’s council chamber in order to discuss our next actions. To this she readily agreed after he included her in our number.

After a long discussion we agreed we must follow after Gilgorgon and descend to the Low-way of the dwarves.

We have word from the High Fairy that we are to leave here tomorrow for our return to Nonin-gal-dith. Gilgorgon suggested we stop by the great hall on the way past the mountain, in order to be sure to catch Dunfallon on his way back to us. His was a sound idea, but I had a better one.
In order not to lose a day, I asked him to send a message to our pixie friend and have him meet us on the slope on the other side. Gilgorgon dispatched a dwarf to that end before the day’s close.
Then, he invited Rumble and me to take dinner with him. We conversed long into the night. We learned about the origin of the dwarves. And he was surprised to hear about the competing stories behind that of our people, the Fairies.
Rumble was gratified that the dwarf tended to agree more with his account.

Meribabell writes:

Merlin feted us today with a gathering around his great hall table as a thanks for rescuing him. His entire household rose and applauded, roared, or chirped for us.

He then went on to explain what he hopes the next few days will hold for us before sending us back out on our ‘great adventure.’

Afterwards the wizard invited me out onto the rampart for a private conversation. My companions were handed over to his major domo – a wise old owl who, they later told me, shared with them some vital instruction.

From the view before me I was struck how much more threatening the darkness seemed today than yesterday. So, when he told me that we were being sent back to Nonin-gal-dith, I could hardly believe him.

He then waved his hand in a circling motion and a vision appeared between us.

It was a troll army – on the move. And I thought of that force that passed us in the wasteland.

Meribabell writes:

I camped just short of the pixie mound in which Rumble was sighted. I wanted to observe before making any contact, especially because my pendant was all asparkle and warm to the touch.

But you cannot just lurk around a pixie settlement. I soon was spotted and was “invited” in.

Rumble was there in their great hall. He even smiled before greeting me and began the introductions to the rulers of this pixie burrow.

He showed no awareness that as far as Nonin-gal-dith was concerned, he – Rumbletwist was considered an enemy.

It was then that I finally heard from the High Fairy in the longest message to date.

Meribabell writes:

The pixies have finally given me back my things. Having chased off the human, the rest joined the ones who seized me.

They carried me off to their great hall deep under the mound. They proved themselves friendly to me. Mainly because they believe I had taken their side against the human. Some of the younger ones as a prank ran off with my things when I had briefly put them aside.

It took a while for the elders to track them all down and restore them to me.

In the meantime the leader Nailbiter showed me every courtesy. They even offered their help in capturing Rumbletwist.

I must weigh my next steps carefully.
