Day One Thousand Two Hundred #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We’re still sorting through the incidents of yesterday. We possess the redoubt. All its defenders are no more. Even Moglen is gone. Caught nearby the altar when fire from heaven descended at the command of Elijah.

What that all means for the future puzzles us. Does it mean Stan gains the advantage?

I can’t think so. But Jezer and a few others are fearful of unlooked for consequences entailed by his ‘sacrifice’ instead of Mawuli’s.

Tomas and the Captain are struggling with the full impact of their actions.

Elijah will talk to them after he finishes conferring with Jezer. Mei and Jezer want to leave immediately for the hiding place, but Elijah has a different opinion.

I believe we’re staying.

Day One Thousand Eighteen #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Quasimo has come out of his crisis of confidence, partly helped by his skill in getting us to the third and last of the relay points, but I believe mostly due to the penetrating insight supplied by Elijah through their discussion.  Elijah was able to put him at peace, both for the present, and with his past. And most glorious of all, for the future.

Our passage today was for the most part uneventful. Reuben did sight a drone, but there was enough time to get everyone into cover. Quasimo said to expect more such sightings from here on out. Especially in the vicinity of the busy road that runs to Damascus from Jerusalem.

That will be the greatest challenge.

Day Nine Hundred Sixty Two #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Jezer had guessed right. Indeed, there were checkpoints where hitherto there had been none. But they were easily spotted and the terrain was such that we had no trouble screening our passage around them.

Reuben took the extra precaution of sending scouts forward to locate any lone sentinels positioned as lookouts. Thankfully there were none.

All these extra exertions were very taxing and slowed our progress as half the time we were headed away from our goal. This frustration we took in stride and made us the more thankful for Jezer’s thoughtfulness in supplying each of us with a water skin.

As we went along Elijah and I discussed with Reuben the things he should know about our mutual future.

Day Eight Hundred Eighty #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Jezer returned this morning.  He was expansive about our prospects for the future. In fact, he has already taken two groups out of the city to the hiding place. And they are hard at work making it habitable for those to follow.

But he also had a word of caution. Among those he led out were some men whose forced labor involved delivery of materials down in the civic center. There they gleaned that two factions, the world government versus the local, were at odds in regards to the disposition of our people.

The locals are for our expulsion. The world government officials want to round us up into concentration camps.

Jezer believes their disagreement will work in our favor.

Day Seven Hundred Ninety Six #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Mei came all the way from the front, back to talk to Elijah and me. Sadness tinged her countenance, but she spoke with resolve.

She was certain that the forces of the world government must be looking for us, and was puzzled how they could miss such a large group since there were only four roads for them to check, leading out of the now dead city.

And so she put her questions- was Elijah responsible for this? And was this something she should know how to do?

I was taken aback. Not for the questions themselves. But for the fact that she had an intimation of what will be required of her in the future.

Elijah took her aside.

Day Seven Hundred Forty Four #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Lung was continually on the lookout for another way down. Elijah assigned the Captain to stay by his side and save him from any rash action.

This has been made easier by the loss of both soldiers’ weapons back on the glacier. I judge we would not have been able to do so otherwise.

Elijah has kept Mei to himself all day. They have remained aloof, keeping their conversation only to themselves. Though I know for sure what they are discussing by her attention to Tomas each time he returns from his scouting.

I believe it will fall to me to talk to Tomas. Certain things he will have to do in the future require that he forgo others now.

Day Six Hundred Four #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

The Captain and Tomas have kept to themselves since their ordeal. It’s clear to me that they were cowed by their experience. Our neighbor paid a call and they thanked him profusely.

After the ex-islander left, Elijah called us together for a talk. He had not planned on telling us, but something our neighbor had said, released him from his silence and indicated that it would be proper and right to reveal a truth about our friends’ future.

As calmly as only Elijah can, he told our friends that they will die martyrs’ deaths together.

Not surprised, Tomas told us that they each had a vision of the deaths of Elijah and myself.

And Elijah added, “Yes. In Jerusalem.”

Day Five Hundred Ninety Six #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Both the Captain and Tomas have finally gotten their land legs. The wait has been beneficial, for it afforded them time to concentrate on plans for the future. Elijah has been very supportive, preparing them for being on their own. For our paths may soon be diverging.

I took a walk around the immediate vicinity to get my bearings. This proved helpful for when Elijah and I made our way back into the city, we didn’t fall off the causeway into the rice paddies, going out or returning.

The city which had seemed empty from the ship in the darkness has transformed into a teeming anthill of people.

Strikingly, we each came away sensing the presence of a hostile spirit.

Day Five Hundred Eighty Four #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

The crew is restive, in part due to idleness, as all the cargo has been unloaded and for the other part, dwelling on the uncertainty of their future.

Two men from the engine room were listed as overdue from their shore leave. But they should be back for the Captain has decided not to pay off the crew until he knows our final disposition. There is the possibility that we will be sent somewhere else for the handover.

Elijah and I helped Mr. Kagi settle his affairs and set up in a nearby residence. He is unsure what he wants to do next. He has let it be known that he would be willing to ship out with us again.

Day Five Hundred Eighty Two #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We raised our next port of call mid-afternoon. It sits on a bay on the central island of another archipelago.

Neither the robotic warship nor any other ship of the global authority questioned our entry.

Our passenger kept to himself. Elijah tried to draw him out on two occasions to limited success. He thinks Mr. Kagi is cowed by fear of the future.

We’ve been welcomed cordially by the port authorities. Our wait will be minimal before unloading commences.

There have been some unlooked for developments. They report that the robotic warship had been here and will be returning. A packet had been left for us containing payment for the materials we had left at the tsunami stricken island.
