The Fairy Diary Day 183 #TFDbyRWOz2

Meribabell writes:

Our dilemma has deepened – as our leaders cannot agree where to send us next. The High Fairy has heard anew from the queen, she now demands that we travel to the Faerie Kingdom. However, Merlin insists that we must set our sights on the evil that emanates from that spot on the horizon.

And I find myself stuck in the middle. Rumble, Dunfallon and Noralei all look to me for the decision. They all feel that it is mine, and only mine to make.

I went off to be alone with my thoughts. This time I avoided the rampart and went down to the courtyard garden. That spot on the horizon may have been out of my sight but not out of my thoughts.

At the back of the garden I came across a curious looking flower – black in leaf and petal. My pendant had an adverse reaction to it. And I knew in the instant that we must journey off to the far horizon.

Meribabell writes:

The High Fairy kept vigil with Merlin the night through while they consulted his seer’s stone. Together they came to the conclusion that the same force allowing the adversary access to the wizard’s castle was also blocking all views of that speck on the horizon.

They are most alarmed.

The High Fairy uncovered the same phenomenon back in Nonin-gal-dith. Yet he never located any agent responsible.

Rumble and Dunfallon remain deep in the library with as of yet nothing of substance to report.

Noralei and I lent a hand wherever we could. We feel quite useless otherwise.

I caught the High Fairy later in the evening and asked after Nimrood and his kingdom. He told me that the situation was settling – with most of the refugees now returned to their farms and villages. Yet there are those few who have not.

However he added that concerns were growing in the capital of the Faerie Kingdom. The queen has asked him to send our group to her.

We agreed that we face a dilemma as to which will be the best course of action.

Meribabell writes:

Merlin took me aside last night and we talked at great length about the tasks before us. He, indeed, was fully aware of the gathering in of iron for use against the Faerie Kingdom. He promises to seize the huge deposit we told him about and will stay in touch with the High Fairy if we discover any more.

About our road ahead he could grant us no insight. He then hushed his voice and revealed he is being watched and must be very circumspect wherever he goes.

These things occupied my thoughts as we walked along the road deeper into the human territory. I kept them to myself not wanting to spoil the cheerful mood among my companions.

Though I must share them soon, especially the dark secret Merlin gleaned from the Wisp and has kept from all except me.

I must wait for the proper time.

Meribabell writes:

I am still disturbed by our experience of yesterday. What we have learned by that and going through the battlefield beforehand has been far less than we expected to find. But that which we did learn was momentous.

The mere thought of all that iron – just lying there – sends chills through me.

It’s all I could think about today as we traversed an empty plain. And the same thought was shared by Rumble and Dunfallon and the High Fairy too – the iron must be meant for use by the enemy in his planned assault on the Faerie Kingdom.

Yet for all that our enemy remains faceless – a complete mystery. We know only his/her/its chosen tools – wolves, trolls, and a vindictive Will’o’the Wisp.

Meribabell writes:

Since we claimed to be here on the orders of the queen of the Faerie Kingdom, Roseberry will not listen to me. They brought in Noralei and the Wisp and placed them in a cell down the way from where they are holding Rumble and myself.

I do not know why Dunfallon was not with them. I am thankful he was not. Do they even know he was with us? Or did he simply escape their notice?

I have to think that riding his eagle about like he did, how could they have failed to notice?

For now I will not say anything. And I hope Noralei will keep mum too.

But I am not sure about Willie.

Thankfully I was able to dash a note off to the High Fairy about our peril undetected.

Meribabell writes:

With some trepidation I called on Noralei in her smithy. She had a customer so I waited to have my audience alone with her. As I sat there a calm settled upon my heart and I felt more certain than ever that I was going to ask the right person to accompany us.

The wait was brief for she fashioned exactly what her client wanted on the first attempt.

As soon as he departed with his bronze hinge, I stepped forward and asked for a moment of her time.

This amused her and I suddenly became self conscious and almost didn’t go on. I’m afraid that I then blurted out what I wanted to say and it was her turn to be confused.

It was a moment before she realized that I was serious and that I had indeed asked her to go on a mission with me that held the safety of the Faerie Kingdom in its power.

She said, “Yes.”

Meribabell writes:

I kept the High Fairy company throughout the night and well into the day. Together he reviewed my account of our adventures, and in particular he was interested in the talisman that Merlin had given me. Then he allowed me to observe his interrogation of the Wisp, deferring at times to my first hand knowledge.

The prisoner was a most unwilling subject and fought his interrogator at every word.

But Willie could not resist answering. In fact he was compelled to do so.

I am sure he was truthful despite all the things he tried to hide. In the end he was unabashedly forthright in revealing the depth of his hatred of the Faerie Kingdom and her neighbors. It went well beyond my original understanding and I turned to the High Fairy and asked if there was any hope for us – for I felt we were utterly betrayed. And now are completely at the mercy of the enemy.

The High Fairy simply dismissed me with the command to return tomorrow with my friends.

Meribabell writes:

We bid goodbye to the guards today. We are very close to the border of the Faerie Kingdom and they are anxious not to create an incident. This despite our assurances that we would vouch for them.

If anything Willie has increased his nastiness. Especially towards Rumble. And does not seem to tire as before. He has kept it up all day.

We shall have to exercise extreme vigilance overnight. And perhaps double up the watch, making it a very long night for each of us.

I wonder what the High Fairy plans to do with him. After he questions him that is. Rumble has stated on many occasions that Willie should be bound up and sent somewhere never to be heard from again.

I am beginning to agree with him.

The Fairy Diary Day 42 #TFDbyRWOz2

Meribabell writes:

We have covered a lot of ground today – from the rise of the sun until its setting. The normal darkness of night is welcome compared to the inky blackness that afflicted our sight and brought so much danger our way.

We spent a good deal of our time discussing it over our evening meal.

Dunfallon plied us with a myriad of questions. Neither Rumble nor myself had a solid answer to any of them. The best I could offer was speculation, tempered by the scraps of information shared by the High Fairy.

Since it is his opinion that the ultimate target is the Faerie Kingdom – the clue to the enemy behind that end must lie in that quarter.

But who?

And yet the fierceness of the attack on the dwarves gives me pause in trusting to that sole conclusion.
