Meribabell writes:

The four of us resisted the urge to run off on our first impulse – or impulses, as we surely would have scattered in every direction. As it is, after some deliberation we did divide into two groups – Rumble and Dunfallon went off with the goblin party that will be exploring an offshoot from the confirmed dragon lair. Noralei and I planned to interrogate Hawk for any details Merlin may have missed.

To that end we asked for and were granted the prisoner’s release from his chains. However, at the goblin commander’s insistence he was placed into a cage. We found him docile, awake, and somewhat willing to talk.

What we wanted to know was why he desired to obtain the dragon egg. He was more responsive to Noralei than to me. And after some patient questioning we learned that he believed that with the egg he at the least would have control of the dragon, and most certainly would have control of the hatchling when its time came.

“Besides,” he added manner-of-factly, “the black bird commanded him to do it.”

He admitted afterwards that it was an outworking of the effect of the curse upon him.

How intricate is the evil woven against us.

Meribabell writes:

We thought something might be headed our way when the sun was late rising this morning. The darkness clung to the horizon reminding us of the battle we fought here. For some reason this time I did not have that overwhelming sense of the presence of evil. I wonder if that was due to my talisman.

Rumble, however, told me that he felt something foul was out there. More than one time I witnessed him shudder and close his eyes, then open them again to focus anew.

The sun eventually did rise and dispelled the dark. We all collectively sighed.

Yet we remained vigilant.

And rejoiced when Gilgorgon and his dwarves joined us before the sun closed the day.

Meribabell writes:

A constant check with the scroll has yielded nothing. The High Fairy, it seems, for now is not responding. I am left to wonder if he knows about our predicament, or if he even cares.

I sent Dunfallon out again and he came back immediately with word that the man is still in the same place and appears to be in a trance himself.

That adds more perplexity to the situation.

Here I was thinking we had come up against the source of the evil that shrouds in darkness, and now there is a possibility we have discovered another victim instead.

Neither Rumble nor Dunfallon wanted to approach the man for fear of a trap. But as we discussed our options, my pendant made the decision for us.

It chose to go to the human’s aid.

And that is how we met Merlin.

Day One Thousand One Hundred Twenty Four #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Far to the west skirmishing between the two armies was ongoing throughout the day as we pushed into the plain.

We proceeded with caution. Our guess that we were behind the lines of the army of the North went unconfirmed, for thankfully we saw no one. Or more importantly – no one saw us.

The sounds of conflict dissipated the further we ventured into the expanse. Our confidence rising we picked up the pace.

Strangely after that my thoughts wandered and I found myself thinking about Moglen and Stan. I recoiled as though burned by just thinking the thought.

I told this to Elijah. He confessed to something similar. But added, “I am certain that they are thinking evil towards us.”
