Day One Thousand One #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

My mind is at ease. Jezer and Tomas arrived this morning. They had a breakdown just south of the first village and it took all of the Purser’s people to drag it into a place with the right equipment for Tomas to attempt a fix.

Tomas is happy with the results and believes his repair should last. And Jezer reported that the Purser’s people should be on the way.

I relayed the good news to Elijah. He nodded with a smile and an arch of his brow. Then took me by the arm and walked me to his meeting with his “pupils.”

He wanted me there as he commissioned them and sent them out once again.

It was a special moment.

Day Six Hundred Ninety One #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

I was the one who stumbled upon the right path this time. Tomas had just returned from an unsuccessful attempt to find a way down when I arrived with the good news.

After an hourlong descent we  were on the level of the pass. Signs were everywhere of the army’s passage: abandoned and broken down equipment, strewn trash and spent fire pits. The area must have been used a multitude of times by different units of the army as it passed along.

After the briefest of rests, we took to the trail again. It was very easy going, our only impediment, having to walk around garbage dumps.

We hadn’t gotten far when the Captain noticed that we were being watched.

Day Six Hundred Fifty Seven #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

The camp is in disarray this morning. We had some unwanted visitors over the night. A swarm of drones descended upon our position  and attacked.

We believe we brought them all down. Either from the rifle fire from our new friends, or from the fierce ire of Elijah when provoked.

Tomas and I combed through the aftermath to be sure nothing was still operable that might give away our position.

There were no casualties among us. The only damage has been to some tents and their contents – supplies and equipment.

Still, it is obvious that we shall have to part company sooner than anyone had planned, or wanted.

Elijah took the chief soldier aside for instruction while we made preparations.

Day Four Hundred Sixty #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Elijah took me on a tour of the city underground. The hum of electricity and the knock of water in pipes dogged our every step. Residence after residence proved empty. So Elijah changed direction and lead us to their subterranean meeting place.

Silence greeted us there. I found the light switch and turned it on. It broke the quiet only to reveal no one was there either. Elijah discovered a tally sheet. A vote had been taken – an unanimous decision to abandon the city for the island interior.

Explanations were made to the Captain in the morning from what little we knew. We asked leave to open the three cargo containers.

Inside was equipment to brand people with the mark.
