Meribabell writes:

When we left behind the trolls and the well that was once the tower of the Dark elves, Merlin turned his attention to Willie by joining him within his cage and stayed there throughout our transit to Laguayil.

I admit as time went on I became uncomfortable at the long bouts of silence between the intermittent buzz of conversation. The wizard emerged as the city of the elves of light came in view. He stated that all was well within and expressed satisfaction at the change in the Wisp’s demeanor.

The frost that covered the fields round about the area we were approaching, melted before our eyes as the sun appeared from behind the clouds that had hung over our entire morning.

Dunfallon maneuvered us around to the main gate, and from there we were shown up to the palace to meet with Nililitil. Navril was there, of course, and he took Dunfallon aside for a quick chat.

Once the formalities were observed, Merlin told the elven king all that had transpired since last they met. Nililitil was particularly interested in what he had to relate about the Sprites. Then, we got around to the point of our visit – seeking their aid for Noralei’s claim for Rayjil.

Navril spoke up at that juncture and volunteered to appear at the hearing in her support. Nililitil agreed to his proposal and drew up a letter for him to give to the Faerie Queen.

Before we departed Merlin asked me to drop a note to the High Fairy to inform him of our imminent arrival. Then, he told me he had decided to ride with Willie again in order to make room on Cluyjil for Navril too.

Navril sang his farewell to his king and once underway took up that pixie ditty with his friend Dunfallon.

Meribabell writes:

It was a day for saying goodbyes. Nililitil and Navril mustered the elves of light and after a touching ceremony in which Fliget gifted each with a cuirass of the finest dwarfish workmanship, they departed for Laguayil.

Nililitil promised to send out orders for all in his kingdom to watch for any sign of our Will’o’the Wisp.

The Dromadil pixies listened to a fine speech by Dunfallon in which he presented each with a sack of gold as their thanks from the dwarves. When they were dismissed they took up the rear guard to the Laguayilian troops.

Next, Fliget saluted our pixie with a surprising gift – a harp of gold that he can carry in his pocket – it grows when played and shrinks back to pocket size afterwards. (The regent thought its music would be the perfect accompaniment to Dunfallon’s stories).

My turn for farewells came shortly after Merlin’s return. There in the city square before all its denizens, Fliget placed a new pendant around my neck. It sported a tiny crystal, so it fit quite nicely and did not clash with my other two pendants. He tells me it has the power to protect me against the ill effects that ordinarily I would suffer in the presence of iron ore.

As proof he revealed that its chain was of that material. I felt marvelous.

Without further adieus Merlin and I were off for his castle. Dunfallon by mutual consent is traveling on his eagle, the better to check for signs of Willie.

And hopefully we will soon know whether or not Rumble and Noralei will be joining us.

For quite some time no activity has been observed down on the Low-way. It tends to make one’s time there on watch boring. And consequently all that time to think. At least for me.

So many things to worry about. Will Dunfallon and the elves of light retrieve the dragon egg? Will Nililitil’s forces break into the dark elves’ stronghold? Will we ever know what happened to Merlin?

And then there has been the strange behavior of the Will’o’the Wisp. He does not converse with us – but he has taken up mimicking us. Repeating the words of our conversations with one another.

I hope Dunfallon returns soon. Perhaps he can break through to Willie.

I believe Rumble and Noralei would welcome his intervention in that matter.

Meribabell writes:

Last night Dunfallon  monopolized all the questions in our meeting with Merlin. (None of us minded, as they were all questions to which we wanted answers too).

All is well in Dromadil. Relations among the pixies, fairies, and elves of the light are for the most part harmonious. Geog is well and is called upon by each group in turn when his great strength is needed for a task. There was nothing to report about Grimace, nor any other trolls in the thrall of the enemy.

The wizard did have some encouraging news. For some reason, the Dromadil pixies have been able to penetrate the enchanted barrier beyond the crystalline tower. They are hoping to locate the enemy soon.

In closing the meeting Merlin announced his imminent departure.

The day on ship passed without incident. We are closing quickly upon the land of the dark elves. Barring any new adverse situation we should make landfall sometime tomorrow.

In the afternoon Merlin gathered us to bid us goodbye. And to relay to us the results of his examination of the rope used to immobilize the rudder – he is certain that it was made from the ugly black plant and thus from the land of the dark elves. He has seen similar cordage inside the crystalline tower.

Meribabell writes:

Before leaving Laguayil, Nililitil presented us with a passport that will cover wherever we desire to go within the kingdom of the elves of light. It further requires obedience to any request we may make of any of his subjects. This should be particularly helpful in securing a ship for us.

We had a new message on my scroll from the High Fairy. He congratulated us for finally setting out and urged us to make all speed. Something is brewing up in the land of the dark elves and he would like us to lift the veil. He is especially concerned because the Faerie Queen has ordered her troops to march to Dromadil to ally with the pixies and the Laguayilian elves when they get there.

We are making good progress, and all are in good spirits. Rumble and Noralei are excited to have Dunfallon back with us.

Meribabell writes:

Our sadness lifted the instant Dunfallon landed with his eagle, accompanied by an ambassador from the Dromadil pixies. They were rushed immediately into the Laguayil council chamber where Nililitil received them with much pomp and ceremony.

While the ambassador negotiated with the Laguayilian leader, Dunfallon filled us in about his latest adventures.

He looked hard and long for these pixies, and at last uncovered them in burrows beside a lake that sits across from the former land of the dark elves. He was received as a great curiosity at first but when he explained that he was there on the behalf of the elves of light he was almost expelled bodily.

On a whim our pixie scavenged the area and discovered the presence of the infamous black plants.

After disposing them, even Dunfallon, as well as the Dromadilians were horrified to see the black crystalline structure across the lake from their burrow.

From that moment it was easy to convince these other pixies the need to reach out to their former allies.

And as if that wasn’t enough to rejoice about – before their ambassador had been selected to return with him – who should show up in the burrow of the Dromadilians but our missing wizard.

And with a twinkle in his eye, our pixie informed us that Merlin will soon be with us here in Laguayil – once he has helped stave off an imminent attack.

Meribabell writes:

It was Nililitil’s turn to correct a misconception in regards to their former alliance with a pixie band that was instrumental in bringing down the dark elves.

My band, especially Dunfallon, held the belief that the elves of light were still allied with this strong clan of pixies. Though true in the past, their relationship has fallen on hard times.

After Nililitil’s sad account of what had occurred for which he admits was the responsibility of the elves, Dunfallon stepped forward and volunteered to be an envoy to help heal the breach.

The elves were touched by his gracious offer.

After a time alone with my team to discuss the problem I gave my consent for him to try.

The pixie took Rumble to Navril so together they could plot out a course to search for them on his eagle.

Meribabell writes:

Before we set out we listened to Rumble as he gave a rundown on the peoples that inhabit this city now in view. When he mentioned it was inhabited and belonged to elves, Noralei drew back with concern.

Dunfallon was quick to allay her apprehension and pointed out from his studies he knew that they were directly opposed to the dark elves and had been involved in bringing about their downfall. In some quarters he explained they were known as elves of the light.

At that point my pendant seemed to gain weight, tugging at my neck, and I added without careful thought that we must exercise caution in our approach for who knows if such is still the reality.

My friends just stared at me until I regained my composure and assured them my words were not definitive. It was just my normal caution coming out.

My whole train of thought was interrupted when we came upon the spot where our stream emptied into a broad river. A river whose destination lay in the city ahead.

We decided to travel parallel to the river’s path rather than on it.
