The Fairy Diary Day 515 #TFDbyRWOz2

Meribabell writes:

I did rest before our departure. It was peaceful and calm. In some measure due I am sure to the kindness of Merlin. A shadow passed over me just prior to waking, or may even had caused me to waken.

I was confronted by a tunnel with the sound of air rushing through it – endlessly droning. And a gripping cold squeezed my heart.

I was so glad to wake up and shake it off.

Then I remembered Noralei’s concern that we guard our minds on the other side. And I donned my breastplate and took up once again my three pendants.

I shall not remove them while in the Land of Darkness.

The dragons were alert and ready, chomping at their bits in their excitement to be off.

I was the last to take my place. They all watched me as I mounted Cluyjil behind Gibley. In unison we signaled our readiness to Merlin and the High Fairy. Then, Gibley and Cluyjil led us up into the sky through the covering clouds.

There before us was a shining moon with a rainbow circled round it. Gibley pointed his dragon towards it and blew the whistle.

Rayjil and her riders to my left faded from view – then Conjil and hers on my right. And last of all us. The rainbow reached out to us and darkened the deeper we went. The rush of wind, its source to the front of us, sucked us in.

At the end we flew through our own reflection into the Land of Darkness.  When we landed it was by the edge of a crater – a crater so vast, we could not see the other side.

We looked to Noralei and from its edge we followed her down into the well.

Meribabell writes:

We have joined with our allies on the crater rim where they have set up their camps. Nililitil invited us into his pavilion for however long we stay in the area.

And who knows how long that may be.

But perhaps of more concern – our enemy remains a mystery. We gathered together at the suggestion of the High Fairy in the camp of the Faerie Queen to discuss this.

In particular, we fairies, wanted to hear how the Dromadil pixies and the Laguayilian elves defeated the dark elves so long ago. Both agree the deciding factor was the resistance of the pixies behind the scenes. And they confirm that this location, the site of their operations, was the original capital of the dark elves – but nothing remains of its former magnificence. For then, it was a city of multiple towers, seven to be precise. Even in the ruins after the defeat of the dark elves, they stood proudly. A great veil had been drawn over the area as the victors departed and those defeated were left to fester in their shame.

A fairy captain was about to pronounce the name of this sad country when Navril leapt to his feet and silenced him.

Then the elf of light declared that we must discover what had became of the dark elves and then we just might know our true enemy.

I stood up and agreed with Navril.

Other than our experience with the elf sailor Hawk, no one else has encountered any dark elves in this land that no one will name. So I proposed that I take my group and descend into the shaft to investigate.

Meribabell writes:

We three fairies joined Dunfallon and Grimace on their side of the rim this morning and together we compared our experiences.

Rumble summarized his notions and those of Noralei and mine. The crater is barren in every direction. A desert really. But at the center lies a great mystery. Each of us looked into the shaft at the center of the crater and felt something different. Rumble thought it strange to see so much smoke swirling but never rising into the air above. Noralei is sure the red glow from below indicates a forge burning and someone or something is hard at work. I experienced an overwhelming heaviness that increased the closer I came to the shaft’s opening.

Rather than tell us their discoveries, Dunfallon and Grimace took us to a camp set up a fair distance away from the crater. Together they had investigated it, having walked the silent grounds filled with the entranced forces of the enemy. The two asked my permission to check the trolls among this host.

I granted it to them. And got out the scroll to write out this latest account to the High Fairy.

Meribabell writes:

We have the High Fairy’s reply. We are to await the arrival of their combined forces – the Dromadil pixies, the elves of the light, the fairy troops and Merlin. In the meantime he wants us to learn all we can.

I selected Rumble and Noralei to work with me to scout the crater – first those parts easily accessible and then the shaft that appears to be in the center and lowest part of the depression.

I assigned Dunfallon and Grimace to patrol the far side of the crater and perhaps ascertain how we can help our allies from our position in the rear of the forces opposing them.

It’s an assignment our pixie especially relishes.

Meribabell writes:

Our assumption that a city or castle or tower belonging to the enemy was hidden from our view has proven false. There was no extra barrier guarded by those black plants masking the seat of the enemy’s power.

Instead we are standing on the rim of the crater Dunfallon saw yesterday looking down into its vastness. Noralei’s compass indicates we have arrived. And my pendants have ceased their agitation. But I sense that it is only the calm before the storm.

We have decided to wait before pressing onwards. And to await an answer to my recent report to the High Fairy.

How close are they?

Should we wait for their arrival?

Day Six Hundred Ninety #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Tomas returned after one of his side jaunts. He had come upon a section of this mountain that in his estimation we should avoid at all costs.

An enormous crater spans the area between our side of the range and the next ridge that would be our desired destination.

Though judging by its topography we would be able to cross it easily, he is convinced it is a radiated area about which we’ve been warned.

A cloud of fine rock dust floats in a continual agitation above the crater, and one can sense a source of heat somewhere beneath its screen.

Elijah decided then and there, that we must descend down into the pass itself.

Even if we must backtrack.
