Day One Thousand One Hundred Seventy Six #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Magwich was in shock when Reuben and Quasimo brought him in. Elijah installed him in an upper room and stayed with him while sending us away.

We conferred briefly before setting up a watch rotation. Quasimo took the first.

Reuben filled me in from what he knew.

They had caught up with Magwich in the affluent section. The area was awash in the flood waters from the destroyed reservoir. Some angry residents had taken him for a looter and were pummeling him mercilessly.

Reuben took command of the situation, ‘arresting’ Magwich and taking him off their hands.

It gave me much to think about on my watch.

With Magwich going in an out of consciousness all day we stayed put.

Day One Thousand Sixty Two #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

I had a dream over night. Everything about it was unexpected, but not unsettling. In fact, I found it a comfort and an encouragement.

In it Grazie came to speak to me, though uttering not a word at first. Her countenance beamed with serenity. Which enfolded me like a hug and communicated more than her voice would have.

And, in effect, shut down a nightmarish vision that lurked at the periphery of my consciousness.

Only after she had my complete attention did she speak.

She simply said, “A child shall lead you.” And smiled.

And was gone.

I shared the dream with Elijah. And at the moment I finished Mawuli walked into our camp. And asked when we were leaving.

Day Six Hundred Sixty Seven #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

The notion that this area was all so familiar came back to me when I stood at the western end of the town and took in a 360 degree view. The flatness to the east and the mountains to the west spoke to a reservoir of memories within. Similar in all respects except for the presence of the town. My recollections for this spot in my consciousness held only open fields.

My reverie was interrupted by the Captain tugging at my sleeve. He wanted to discuss our departure from here.  He had learned a truck with room for all of us would be heading west sometime in the next two days.

The next moment Tomas brought news about the army.

Day Four Hundred Sixty Four #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

Clouds gave way to blue skies today. Opening to our view, the seas that stretch interminably before us.

In my downtime a thought flitted across my consciousness. It was so easy to imagine that we had sailed off the face of the earth. Is there any land left out there in that vastness we have not been to?

Elijah responded to my musings. He said our journey was far from over. If only because he does not sense a release from his charge. But he added that we should take full advantage of these times of peace to recharge and prepare. For a time is coming when we shall have no respite from the storm. With every hand against us.
