Day One Thousand One Hundred Sixty #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

I let a day go by and pondered Tomas’s concern and thereby it became my own. Only then did I bring it up with Elijah.

He listened to me without interruption. But when I had finished, he asked me a simple question – what did I propose be done?

And I realized I had given little thought to it. Rather I had concluded and was hoping that Elijah would do something.

But then an idea came to me. Could we not send Quasimo and his cousin to help our friend? They knew Babylon and Mr. Kagi.

Elijah pointed out were not our friends mature? (Here he included Mawuli). And did they not know the One in whom we place our trust?

It has taken this entire day to clear up the many misunderstandings that had taken hold of me in my exhausted state. In particular I formed a simple census in my head as to who is here and who is not.

Mr. Kagi is not missing, rather he had not come up with the Captain but sailed back to Babylon. That news dismayed me. But not as much as the clarification that Mawuli disappeared when out with the Captain, Sy, and Magwich as they were going around methodically destroying the routes into the hiding place. They believe that he took it into his head to go up to Jerusalem. All by himself.

Elijah called a meeting to talk about Mawuli.

Relief. Relief and peace filled our very beings with our first steps back into the hiding place.

Though we always carry peace with us, I do say I appreciated that these surroundings very much reinforced it. I could sense the stress falling off of me.

Soon we were surrounded by the well wishes of our brothers and sisters, led by Meesa and Quasimo.

Seeing our exhaustion they quickly prepared places for each of us. A good thing, for I could barely hold my head up.

A night of dreamless sleep seemed over in an instant.

We rose, gathered and took stock. Both Mei’s group and the Captain’s had made it safely from Babylon. Only Mawuli and Mr Kagi were absent.

Day One Thousand One Hundred Thirty Two #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

We stayed atop one of those dead-ends last night. We were too tired and it was too dark to make our way back down.

So when the morning dawned clear and bright we had an uninterrupted view down the plain. The army of the North had pivoted towards Babylon and appeared to be preparing an assault in that direction or setting up to receive one.

I admit I stared upon the scene with fascination.

But Elijah did not allow us to linger long. The view of our route ahead was also clear, at least as long as we could carry the memory we thought we should be able to avoid the next few dead end paths.

And so it proved.

We returned to familiar ground today. Territory that Elijah and I remembered from our journey down to Babylon. From my calculation we were only two or three days from Sy’s redoubt in the mountains.

We described Sy’s fortress to Reuben and he said that he had come across a place of that description on his way through the Galilee region. In fact, he had stopped to spend the night, having been invited to do so by another man whom he took to be someone who belonged there.

Elijah asked our friend to describe this individual.

After he did, Elijah and I looked at one another. His description matched our nemesis Moglen.

I asked Reuben if Moglen had inquired about us.

I don’t know who was more overjoyed, or relieved – Reuben or us. Perhaps it was dependent upon whoever was sharing. For we mutually encouraged one another by the good news we were each privy to.

All was well at the hiding place according to his account. And for him to hear from us that Tomas was well gave him immense satisfaction.

The fact that he was here was the result of his search for Tomas. The trail that he had pieced together to follow him, lead him to us.

He strongly considered going on to Babylon, but we dissuaded him. It was very providential to have him with us as we left the plain behind and climbed into the hills.

Tomas was dispatched to the north this morning to pinpoint the whereabouts of the army of the world government – especially those units operating in the vicinity of Babylon.

The Supreme Commander wants to knock out the artillery that has been compounding his problems. And perchance head off any further instances of the purple fog.

Consequently, Elijah and I have been restricted to our building. All for our safety of course, but I have more a sense that it insures the return of Tomas.

Strange, for I thought that the Supreme Commander was more confident in the loyalty of Tomas than of ours.

Perhaps it makes little difference for at base we are all hostages.

And we look for our deliverance.

Day One Thousand One Hundred Eight #DiaryoftheEndoftheWorld

In our meeting of yesterday the Supreme Commander revealed to us news of the conflict raging far to the north, as the forces out of that fastness have been engaged by those of the world government. He was content to sit out and let them weaken one another, all the better to step in later and destroy them both.

We welcomed this news but for another reason, and advised Quasimo’s cousin and Mei that now would be the best time for them to depart on their journey.

They agreed and Tomas concurred and together we escorted them to point outside of Babylon to the west.

As we were parting, Lung appeared and committed to accompany the women on their journey.

My thoughts turned to Quasimo today. No doubt prompted by our new surroundings.

Tomas and Mr Kagi have ensconced us in a palatial villa very much like the one in which Quasimo had us pause for a meal on our way out of Babylon, not long after Stan thought he had eliminated Elijah and myself.

To get to it they led us by immense holding pens in which many loyal citizens of the world government had been incarcerated. The stench from within was horrific.

Apathy and neglect can be as deadly as overt hostility.

Tomas no sooner had left when he returned with another guest in tow. Quasimo’s cousin.

She had been sent from the hiding place to retrieve us.
